Agreed on the whole Gibsonian aesthetic being woefully misrepresented in basically everything but he -did- write the screenplay for Johnny Mnemonic iirc, so he has to shoulder at least some of the blame.

Gibson did indeed oversee a lot of things about that movie's production, but like so many other things, the film was taken away from the filmmakers by the studio who then completely changed it.
He claims that the version released in Japan is the closest thing to a true director's cut. I've never seen it, personally.

I'd love to see Neuromancer headed by a decent director.

I have the extended cut of Johnny Mnemonic but I haven't watched it yet. From what I've read it's not actually that much different, a few minutes of conversation were cut out for the theater. Maybe the Japanese version is something else entirely though.


Anyway, Johnny Mnemonic is pretty great, just not in the way they meant it to be.
