Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-08-12

Actually looks pretty good. I really enjoyed ep7 . It feels weird that star wars is awesome again..

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-08-12

how anyone coud have said they enjoyed that warmed over bile is beyond me. the han solo "smuggler standoff" scene with those retarded fucking whirling alien things was sub-syfy channel

Anaxagoras - 2016-08-12

I'm with you, Purple Cat. This trailer got me pretty excited too. And ep7 was also pretty damn cool. I never would have guessed that having such a whiny, ineffectual villain would work so well.

Nominal - 2016-08-13

Anything that manages to be better than the prequels is going to receive huge praise just out of sheer shattered expectations, just like everyone said Revenge of the Sith was good when all they had to compare it to was The Phantom Menace.

I couldn't get into Force Awakens at all. It just felt like obligatory cameras meets fan fiction with Mary Sue protagonist.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

The Force Awakens was adequate. Enjoyable at the time, little forgettable, no strong feelings either way - classic JJ Abrams, in other words.

Which is a little disappointing, now that think about it, because the Original Trilogy was genuinely good cinema, and the Prequel Trilogy was so awful that I and the rest of the nerdosphere could take a perverse joy in it.

Nominal - 2016-08-14

Obligatory cameos, not cameras.

Yes, cameras would be obligatory for a movie.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-08-12

wasn't this originally supposed to be somethin akin to a historical war epic but they went in and reshot the shit out of it?

unknown_specimen - 2016-08-15

Yeah that sounds like Star Wars

betamaxed - 2016-08-12

This looks totally dope and way better than TFA ever did. Also, if it captures the feel of a classic euro war movie like KOMMANDO LEOPARD then I will be there with a ticket on a midnight showing.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2016-08-12

Still haven't seen the Abrams one but this looks pretty good.

Anaxagoras - 2016-08-12

You can get ep7 at Redbox now. It's well worth the .xx.

Anaxagoras - 2016-08-12

err.... that was supposed to read "It's well worth the One dollar and xx cents". Stupid special characters screwed up the post.

chumbucket - 2016-08-12

Eh, last trailer was better.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-12

The sentence: "Donnie Yen is in a Star Wars movie" is not one I would have ever expected to utter in my lifetime.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-12

Also, I read somewhere that they are giving Neil Breen a cameo in this, I shit you not. It will probably be subtle, like all the cameos in Episode 7, but holy shit.

Maggot Brain - 2016-08-13

Anyone else getting "The Last Airbender" vibes just a little bit?

William Burns - 2016-08-13

OH BOY A STAR WARS PREQUEL

Disney could have made a proper prequel trilogy. Instead we're going to get a sequel to episode 3.

namtar - 2016-08-13

I really doubt this will be anything like the prequels

Anagramother - 2016-08-13

To remake the prequels so soon would be a direct snub to many many people in the industry who worked on them and also work to alienate fans of those.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

No, the prequels at least had a connection to the plot of the original movies. This is just bulk audio/visual product. I really don't see the presence of Star Wars branding as a merit anymore.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

@Anagramer Are you fucking serious? This is the parent company of Marvel.

SolRo - 2016-08-13

So it's bad because it's not a remake?

Wow.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

It's a remake of the opening crawl to episode 4.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

It's also a hard reboot of the first level of Dark Forces.

But it does have Darth Vader in it so we can have Darth Vader-branded Doritos for the first time in more than a decade!

SolRo - 2016-08-13

The hipster is strong in this one.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

If it's hipster to point out that the Star Wars EU is currently built on a bedrock of loosely-packed diarrhea, then sure.

SolRo - 2016-08-13

The previous movie was good, and this trailer looks good, so I'll give it a chance if early reviews aren't terrible.

You can keep one being edgy on the internet, it will get you all the high school girls.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

Edgy hipster used to be a very real and effective insult, circa episode 2 or so.

GQ - 2016-08-13

Also, honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if one of Lucas' provisions for selling it to Disney was that they can't retcon out the prequel movies

William Burns - 2016-08-13

That seems like the characteristic George Lucas thing to do. It's too bad, they are the gold standard of the sort of movie that SHOULD be remade.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

Yeah, speaking of Dark Forces - I don't know anything about this movie, and I have to admit I didn't even watch until the end of the trailer, but... IS this Kyle Katarn? The beardo and the setup, that was certainly my first thought, too.

Gmork - 2016-08-13

Space Masada.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-08-13

i hope they can find the plans for the death star, i'm just so tired of all these star wars

memedumpster - 2016-08-13

In the midnight hour she cried war war war
With a rebel yell she cried war war war
War war war!

Two Jar Slave - 2016-08-13

Watching this won't make me feel anything. It probably doesn't have an interesting plot, or engrossing characters, or original images, and I doubt there's any T&A at all. But it looks fun for kids. At this point in my life I'm fine with saying, "This Star Wars movie is not for me: it is for children who will be excited by it, whose wee imaginations will be fired up by it, and who will want to play Star Wars on the monkey bars for the next couple weeks."

Guys, it took me way too long to get here.

bawbag - 2016-08-13

5 stars for this.

Absolutely spot-on, also applies to new Trek, Ghostbusters etc etc etc.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

Also applies to Phantom Menace, Indiana Jones 4, Robocop 3, ect. "It's for kids" is an excuse, not a reason.

SolRo - 2016-08-13

I nominate burns for 3dgiest emo currently on PoETV.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

The movies you like are dumb and so are you ;)

SolRo - 2016-08-13

All movies have to be made to satisfy the edgy depressed hipster standard, anything less is just an excuse.

SolRo - 2016-08-13

Actually, I take that back.

You're the fucking comicbook guy from the simpsons, arguing about a kids movie like it has to be a deadly serious masterpiece OR THE WORLD IS A LIE!

William Burns - 2016-08-13

Just enjoy what you enjoy, you don't have to get defensive about it. I really like the original cuts of eps. 4,5 and 6. I though episode 7 was way to dour, but that's because I'm a depressed emu.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

Hey guys, have you seen Stranger Things?

Fuck man, that show is balls-out awesome. Could easily be the next Breaking Bad, in my books.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

Which is to say, if you know any kids yourself, tell them to skip Star Wars and watch Stranger Things instead. They'll thank you when they get old enough to be hipsters themselves.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

I mean, could you imagine if, when WE were kids, instead of watching cutting-edge stuff like Star Wars and Ninja Turtles and AKIRA, we'd wasted our time on reboots of Flash Gordon and long-forgotten Fifties spy comics? We'd be the worst hipsters on the block now.

Also, kids don't play on monkey bars these days, not unless there's a Pokemon hotspot at the top of it.

GQ - 2016-08-13

Calling Ninja Turtles "cutting edge" is a bit generous. Most of it was pretty trash. A LOT of 80's stuff if you watched it nowadays should be recognized as pretty trash.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

It was cutting-edge so far as kids' interests were concerned, and I'd argue that in another three decades, Force Awakens, and in all likelihood this movie too, will be looked back on as fairly trashy.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

Just started Stranger Things last night. Pretty good so far! I like hearing children cuss.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-13

I heard the other day they were going to be doing a second season. I loved this whole first season - fucking LOVED it - but I'm a little hesitant about Netflix doing more, and I'm really hoping they don't True Detective it.

Or worse, Star Wars it.

William Burns - 2016-08-13

Okay, three episodes in. I... fucking love it, too! I'd be surprised if I don't finish it tonight.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-08-14

Stranger Things was good TV. :) Not much of a 'point' to any of it, but some damn charming characters and cool horror.

People point out its many references to Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter, and so on. But do you think The Upside-Down is an intentional reference to the Silent Hill series? Silent Hill, if you don't remember, features a spooky, 'corrupted' mirror universe filled with similar looking monsters and gently-falling snowflakes. I haven't seen anyone else bring this up, but it jumped out at me. And I thought, well, why not? These directors didn't pop out of a time capsule from the 80s; they may have enjoyed one of the biggest horror series in gaming. Anyway, on top of all the nostalgia stuff it was doubly exciting to finally see a great film adaptation of Silent Hill.

Unless of course Silent Hill was also derivative of something else I don't know about.

Nominal - 2016-08-14

Original Trek and Ghostbusters weren't kids movies.

memedumpster - 2016-08-14

When I was a teen I was reading so-called grown-up horror like King, Koonts, McCammon, etc, so Stranger Things really did it for me, I enjoyed it a lot.

When I saw the Rogue One trailer, it was during a half hour commercial fest of other remakes, reboots and offenses. Compared to the remake of the Magnificent Seven (an actual shame Adam Sandler didn't make it) and Ben Hur (completely offensive trailer to watch in every way), I felt nothing for Rogue One.

Rogue One doesn't inspire emotions, so compared to the absolute drek it certainly has that going for it.

On the other end of the spectrum is the new xXx movie, which looks like an absolutely fun popcorn blast of a movie, as does Jack Reacher.

wtf japan - 2016-08-13

I can't believe I agree with SolRo about something. :-(

Hooker - 2016-08-14

The main character seems completely obnoxious from the two trailers so far.

memedumpster - 2016-08-14

WHOA!

WHOA!

I just watched this again, and at 1:43 I have a question. What are those... things? There are these structures around the platform, they go almost all the way around. What the fuck is that? Then at 1:45 you see the TIE fighter rising up and those things are there again, on each side of the walkway. Why are those there? What purpose could they possibly ever serve?

Why were these weird ass protrusions added to Star Wars sets? I don't like how uncomfortable, even unsafe, they make the scene look. Someone could hurt themselves on those, they're not realistic.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-08-14

Rogue One would make a great theme for your revival 70's conversion van. Airbrush her in the slave Leia outfit astride a centaur Darth Vader with the Death Star looming moonlike behind them. Tie fighter front grill. Room in the back for banging and blasting.

Which is all to say, yeah, now that you mention it, those fuckers could put your eye out if you're not careful!

EvilHomer - 2016-08-15

What... you mean the railings?

Railings are basically small, low-cost walls; they are most commonly used to stop people from falling off high places. We have them in real life, too. They are used for safety, and as such, are generally safe themselves - unless they have been poorly constructed and/or have components that have come lose due to age, like that railing down by the sea-cliffs, the one that nearly caused me to break my arm last month.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-15

Sort of shooting my own thesis in the foot here, but here's a video on IRL railings:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wK93wlspyA

Also this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4OYJp6Ro0M

And this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndF2dabEa8U

The point being, they are a real thing, and whomever designed the Star Wars set is apparently familiar with them.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-15

Oh here we go with another cynical cash grab from Disney! When is Hollywood going to learn that people are sick of sequels, reboots, and remakes? This is going to flop hard, am I right?

(Sound of crickets.)

EvilHomer - 2016-08-15

Still sore about Ghostbusters, huh?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-15

(Sound of crickets, Evil Homer)

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-15

Just to be clear, can't wait to see this!

EvilHomer - 2016-08-15

But you just said you didn't want to see any more sequels, reboots, and remakes?

Granted, this is none of the three - it's a prequel, evidently to Episode IV - but still, you seem to be coming down rather hard on this movie.

You haven't even seen this film yet. What gives?

EvilHomer - 2016-08-15

Also, how did you like Stranger Things, Mr Holmes?
