I'm with you, Purple Cat. This trailer got me pretty excited too. And ep7 was also pretty damn cool. I never would have guessed that having such a whiny, ineffectual villain would work so well.

Anything that manages to be better than the prequels is going to receive huge praise just out of sheer shattered expectations, just like everyone said Revenge of the Sith was good when all they had to compare it to was The Phantom Menace.

I couldn't get into Force Awakens at all. It just felt like obligatory cameras meets fan fiction with Mary Sue protagonist.

The Force Awakens was adequate. Enjoyable at the time, little forgettable, no strong feelings either way - classic JJ Abrams, in other words.

Which is a little disappointing, now that think about it, because the Original Trilogy was genuinely good cinema, and the Prequel Trilogy was so awful that I and the rest of the nerdosphere could take a perverse joy in it.

To remake the prequels so soon would be a direct snub to many many people in the industry who worked on them and also work to alienate fans of those.

No, the prequels at least had a connection to the plot of the original movies. This is just bulk audio/visual product. I really don't see the presence of Star Wars branding as a merit anymore.

Yeah, speaking of Dark Forces - I don't know anything about this movie, and I have to admit I didn't even watch until the end of the trailer, but... IS this Kyle Katarn? The beardo and the setup, that was certainly my first thought, too.

Fuck man, that show is balls-out awesome. Could easily be the next Breaking Bad, in my books.

Which is to say, if you know any kids yourself, tell them to skip Star Wars and watch Stranger Things instead. They'll thank you when they get old enough to be hipsters themselves.

I mean, could you imagine if, when WE were kids, instead of watching cutting-edge stuff like Star Wars and Ninja Turtles and AKIRA, we'd wasted our time on reboots of Flash Gordon and long-forgotten Fifties spy comics? We'd be the worst hipsters on the block now.

Also, kids don't play on monkey bars these days, not unless there's a Pokemon hotspot at the top of it.

Calling Ninja Turtles "cutting edge" is a bit generous. Most of it was pretty trash. A LOT of 80's stuff if you watched it nowadays should be recognized as pretty trash.

It was cutting-edge so far as kids' interests were concerned, and I'd argue that in another three decades, Force Awakens, and in all likelihood this movie too, will be looked back on as fairly trashy.

Just started Stranger Things last night. Pretty good so far! I like hearing children cuss.

I heard the other day they were going to be doing a second season. I loved this whole first season - fucking LOVED it - but I'm a little hesitant about Netflix doing more, and I'm really hoping they don't True Detective it.

Or worse, Star Wars it.

Stranger Things was good TV. :) Not much of a 'point' to any of it, but some damn charming characters and cool horror.

People point out its many references to Spielberg, Stephen King, John Carpenter, and so on. But do you think The Upside-Down is an intentional reference to the Silent Hill series? Silent Hill, if you don't remember, features a spooky, 'corrupted' mirror universe filled with similar looking monsters and gently-falling snowflakes. I haven't seen anyone else bring this up, but it jumped out at me. And I thought, well, why not? These directors didn't pop out of a time capsule from the 80s; they may have enjoyed one of the biggest horror series in gaming. Anyway, on top of all the nostalgia stuff it was doubly exciting to finally see a great film adaptation of Silent Hill.

Unless of course Silent Hill was also derivative of something else I don't know about.

Original Trek and Ghostbusters weren't kids movies.

When I was a teen I was reading so-called grown-up horror like King, Koonts, McCammon, etc, so Stranger Things really did it for me, I enjoyed it a lot.

When I saw the Rogue One trailer, it was during a half hour commercial fest of other remakes, reboots and offenses. Compared to the remake of the Magnificent Seven (an actual shame Adam Sandler didn't make it) and Ben Hur (completely offensive trailer to watch in every way), I felt nothing for Rogue One.

Rogue One doesn't inspire emotions, so compared to the absolute drek it certainly has that going for it.

On the other end of the spectrum is the new xXx movie, which looks like an absolutely fun popcorn blast of a movie, as does Jack Reacher.

Rogue One would make a great theme for your revival 70's conversion van. Airbrush her in the slave Leia outfit astride a centaur Darth Vader with the Death Star looming moonlike behind them. Tie fighter front grill. Room in the back for banging and blasting.

Which is all to say, yeah, now that you mention it, those fuckers could put your eye out if you're not careful!

Railings are basically small, low-cost walls; they are most commonly used to stop people from falling off high places. We have them in real life, too. They are used for safety, and as such, are generally safe themselves - unless they have been poorly constructed and/or have components that have come lose due to age, like that railing down by the sea-cliffs, the one that nearly caused me to break my arm last month.
