It looks like someone used the QI desk to hold a thousand gallons of blood.

Brian Cox once demonstrated relativity on a stage in front of everyone, so the word "waifu" does not accurately describe my cult enshrinement of his being.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-19

This is interesting, but Cox made the usual mistake that people make with climate deniers which is discussing or explaining the evidence. Bad move.
What you do with people like Roberts is you shift the burden of proof fairly onto their shoulders. Every major scientific body in the world has now concluded that climate change is man-made, or at least man-influenced. This is basically no longer in debate except on the fringes where some researchers are still using shitty arguments like solar radiation is doing it etc.

So, as the saying goes, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So if he has evidence to disprove it, let's see it. If he has evidence that there is a massive global conspiracy to promote climate change, let's see it. Again...place the burden of proof where it belongs. If I had been in Cox's shoes I would have pointed out that if someone can undo the decades of climate research and had evidence to do so, not only would they guarantee grants for years, but they might also be in a line for a Nobel. So, by all means.....write your papers and submit them to journals. *That* is how you deal with deniers, creationists, etc.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-19

I will concede, though, he came *close* when he asked Roberts to explain what method other than prediction can you use to forecast, which resulted in nothing (in the unedited clip).

memedumpster - 2016-08-19

Your method wouldn't have made a dent. He would have denied and continued to deny forever. His job is to engage you in animal noises while the world dies. Engaging him at all is an immediate loss-loss for you and humanity.

Agreed. There is the technical problem of creating the new energy technology and there is the political problem of getting those solutions into the marketplace. Both require "all hands on deck" approach at this point. Grunting at the monkeys is a distant third, some component of solving the political problem at best.

If you are reading this, and it matters to you, stop arguing with the trolls and paid shills and start working directly at the solutions. Ignore people like Malcolm Roberts, if at all possible. Time grows very short. History will only remember this, and what we did or did not do to stop it.

Raggamuffin - 2016-08-19

The senator is a Motivated Reasoner. He wants to believe something, so he's not going to change his mind no matter what you say or do. If you tell him something he'll say, "show me evidence." When you show him evidence he'll say, "that's a lie." The only reasonable course of action is to stop going after him, and start focusing on convincing the audience. Be the more reasonable one. Be nicer, be smarter, give the guy some rope to tangle himself up with, and whatever you do don't get mad.

spikestoyiu - 2016-08-19

The biggest problem with people like this is that their evidence isn't REAL evidence. So asking them for it wouldn't have gotten anyone anywhere. People like this will never budge, so I think the best thing to do is put all of the facts out there so that anyone watching or listening, who may be a bit impressionable, can come to the correct conclusion before it's too late.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-08-19

You make it sound like the end of a Billy Jack movie, where some earnest hippie with sideburns speaks the Truth to the People from The Free School and Billy rides off into the sunset on his jeep. Deus ex machina.

For anyone that cares to reason, the facts are all readily available and have been since the pioneering work done at Exxon in the 70's. Facts may be stubborn things, but as Reagan wryly noted, they are also stupid.

If you're of this kind of mindset, perhaps you can help by establish truth and reconciliation committees to deal with the aftermath. I've heard they work very well in areas where the population is abused without usual recourse. Something is going to be needed, because we're well on the path to becoming Venus at this point.

Old_Zircon - 2016-08-19

"before it's too late."

Pretty sure we passed that line sometime around 1980, and the thing now should be damage control and trying to make the inevitable transition to a very different global way of life over the next generation or two as painless as possible.

Corpus Delectable - 2016-08-19

Every time I've seen Cox make extemporaneous remarks, he disappoints. He was asked to provide evidence, and he talked about the urgency of the problem. The models he relies on were attacked, and he asked about methodology in the absence of models. He was accused of debate tricks, and didn't protest that his opponent disbelieving in the Moon landings is clearly within the realm of possibility. And on and on.

Smart guy, but he doesn't have the debate game that this issue needs.

Five, because our heroes are letting us down.

memedumpster - 2016-08-19

I think you overestimate the rational capacity to reach deniers.

I honestly think he wasted his time having the debate if it was for any reason other than to entertain the choir.

kamlem - 2016-08-19

This senator and his cohorts are unfortunately part of the balance of power in the new Australian senate.

See the pic halfway down this article...

Anything our already anti climate change, pro coal, "scary infrasound wind power", no-science-minister-at-all re-elected government want to pass through the senate will require conciliation to this fuckwit.

Wish us luck.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-08-19

If AC/DC has never had a drummer named Brian Cox, I'm sure they will someday.
