We're talking about a geologic time scale here, the entire history of human civilization, since the development of agriculture about 10,000 years ago (which is barely any time at all) could easily be considered a phase of an extinction event. And probably will be if there's anything paying attention 30 million years from now.
The PR-Tr extinction event was about 100,000 years long, for comparison.
