As opposed to the likely alternative, which is that the filibuster happens, the GOP eliminates the filibuster for supreme court appointments, and we get Gorsuch.

Or third option, Democrats filibuster for as long as they reasonably can, but since the filibuster brings the entire Senate docket to a grinding halt, it prevents the Senate from attending to other pressing business. So eventually the Democrats feel they need to move on and end the filibuster, and the 72% of America that DIDN'T vote Democratic blame the Democrats for losing in a no-win position.

If they have anything like the GOP's staying power that could take us through the mid-terms.
