I'm currently making flower arrangements for that guy's funeral tomorrow. The one you see doing a flying cartwheel of death.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2017-07-29
When the local news interrupted normal broadcasting when this happened, the anchors were having an really awkward time trying to describe the ride. "It swings side to side, but there's another part that spins around..." complete with hand gestures.

God damn you, submitter. Thanks to your description, I can't stop laughing at this clip.
People..... real people... got hurt and killed, and I'm still laughing about it.
Damnit.

BillLumbergh - 2017-07-29 a man who just wanted to take a ride at an amusement park abruptly and violently died. then he lost his dignity on the world wide web and a whole family is traumatized. yeah this is some funny shit alright

15th - 2017-07-29 Jesus, dude, this isn't funny at all.

BillLumbergh - 2017-07-29 I'm an unsympathetic asshole most of the time, and your callousness absolutely amazes me. I find it weird. It's a weird feeling.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-07-29 I'm usually a sap for things like this, and this time is no different. I'm horrified. The guy who died was 18 years old.
But I once saw a video of a guy being pulled apart by a couple of military jeeps, and I laughed my ass off. I hadn't been expecting it, and it hit me a certain way. It happens to everyone. So no judgements. Its not going to make their suffering one bit worse.
|
Nominal - 2017-07-29 I watch this as a warning to not trust these carny rides, and will try to convince others the same, possibly saving lives, which Bill Lumbergh is against.
NOW who's the monster?!?!

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-30 *This* comment struck a nerve? That framing a real-life tragedy as roller-coaster tycoon (wherein these kinds of things happened regularly as part of the game) made the clip seem like a sick joke rather than the unmitigated tragedy that it was?
To recap: no, this event was not funny in any objective way. The juxtaposition between the horribleness of real-life with something that I had simulated multiple times during the course of a computer game was..... I don't know if "amusing" is the right word. "Gallows humour" is probably a better term. It's not callousness. But feel free to call it that if you want, I guess.
"But I once saw a video of a guy being pulled apart by a couple of military jeeps, and I laughed my ass off. I hadn't been expecting it, and it hit me a certain way. It happens to everyone."
Yeah.... it's kinda like this. Although in my case, it's precisely because the clip *didn't* show any gore that the submitter's framing worked; the clip looks just like a scene out of Roller Coaster Tycoon.

Nominal - 2017-07-30 Look, the point is BillLumbergh is a horrible monster for wanting carny accidents to continue rather than promote videos educating people to stay away.

Our state fair is a great state fair. Don't miss it, don't even be late.

Anaxagoras: just to clarify.. the "callousness" part was meant for Callamon because he's just unpleasant in general. The fact that you laughed at this was upsetting to me, but at least you we're conflicted about it so you're obviously not a callous person

It's always boggled my mind how people are willing to plonk down entire paychecks for tattoos, Fourth of July fireworks, and all-day ride passes at the carnival. But there they are, every year, new tattoos, fingers singed from throwing Whistling Petes at tombstones, and happy to get onto a human salad spinner assembled, operated and maintained by crank addicted ex-con Okies.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-30 You've got a better chance of getting speared through the face by an errant log or metal pipe while driving down the freeway than getting seriously injured on an amusement ride, is why.
Danger is fun, and these things are relatively safe cheap thrills.
At the place I worked at, the worst accident we ever had in 8 years was some lady doing something she was explicitly told not to do broke her nose on the log flume.
The worst thing I personally witnessed while operating a ride was having to hit the emergency stop because some kid had figured out how the latches that keep in the roller coaster worked. He'd opened his restraint while the ride was going, and when I jumped up and screamed at him (this was was scaring the shit out of me) he got his finger caught in the latch trying to close it again. Nothing serious, just a blood blister, and a polite request by me to not fuck with his restraints.
