The first Death Wish is a reaction to the rise of ultra-macho male culture in the 1970s, showing us a milquetoast pacifist forbidden any outlet for his grief except to completely destroy his own personality in a series of escalating acts of pointless violence. (Remember: he never gets his hands on the gangsters who kill his wife; he just kills indiscriminately until he stops feeling things.) It's a cautionary story about the addictive quality of "justified retribution," and how, in the end, it will transform a complex human being into a dull monster. It's as pro-vigilantism as First Blood.

I'm sure this Bruce Willis paycheque (remember Bruce Willis? from the movie poster with the guy with the gun in his hand standing in front of some fire?) will do its themes justice.

Everything Eli Roth does shows him to be a pathetic frightened little man. Everything from the movies he makes to his tough guy persona betrays the trembling notochord huddled within.

He's the annoying kid at the sleepover who tried to disguise his terror by boasting how he would just kick Freddy Kruger & Jason's asses then got the asthmatic kid in a headlock to prove his strength.

Financed and co-written by the NRA apparently.

If Jeff Goldblum and Lawrence Fishburne reprise their roles from the original Death Wish movies, it might redeem this.

Sure this looks dumb, I mean it's an Eli Roth film so without a doubt it's going to be dumb and plodding but the various shrieky “This Whole Thing Smacks of Fascism" I holler as I overturn my uncle’s barbeque grill and turn the 4th of July into the 4th of Shit" takes on the trailer are often just as dumb, ranging from merely smarmy to hysteria-tinged.

I couldn't care less about this, so as long as it doesn't eventually lead to a remake of Death Wish 3. That film is an untouchable work of art.
