I didn't see a winged centaur. There'd better be a winged centaur, God damn it.

I went through a lot of reactions in two minutes.
0:00 - Oh no really? They're making generic crap out of A Wrinkle in Time? I loved that book! It's so different and sweet and kookey, so out of the normal sci fi realm. Why does Disney have to shit on it?
0:30 - Actually this is a pretty good visual take, I might go see this.
0:45 - Oh holy shit Camazotz! And the angel star women ladies. And tesseracts! I remember that stuff. Damn Madeleine l'Engle is cool. Like what CS Lewis should have been. She got a lot of hate from the kind of evangelical who is now voting for Roy Moore, since she believes in love and caring and stuff.
1:00 - Trailer is generic, sure, but I'm pretty enthused. Also good on them for making Meg black -- or I guess half black if her dad is white?
1:45 - And then I pissed myself.

Am I the only one who really, really hated these books? They came off as Ayn Rand trying to crib Norton Juster with C.S. Lewis' Christian overtones only without the slightest attempt at subtlety.

Nominal - 2017-11-24 Nah. I read them when I was around 9 or 10. That was the impression I had at the time (even if I wouldn't know how to describe it as such until later).
Actually, scratch that. Replace Ayn Rand with Orson Scott Card. All the kids reeked of special children syndrome, suffering the pain of all being uber geniuses persecuted by the dumb jocks at school.
The one where they get transported to Noah's ark was abysmal. It hundreds of pages of human body odor description and abstinence preaching. You can't tell me that was for young children.

Nominal - 2017-11-24 Many Waters : Madeline L'Engel :: Speaker for the Dead : Orson Scott Card
|
garcet71283 - 2017-11-24 So Mary Sue protagonist Orson Scott Card or adolescent homoerotic naked shower wrestling Orson Scott Card?
|
Marlon Brawndo - 2017-11-25 The author did have Christian messages but it's ironically one of the books that fundamentalists love to hate the most, citing that it has confusing ethics, etc. Which just means they are too stupid to understand it, or maybe they were just freaked out by Charles Wallace riding piggyback onto people's souls or whatever.
|
Old_Zircon - 2017-11-25 As a kid I liked the first two and hated the third. As an adult the first one is still pretty decent, the second one is forgettable and the third one is as bad as ever.
At no age could they hold a candle to Watership Down.
The series I never got was the Narnia books. Didn't like them a bit as a kid, didn't like them a bit as an adult.
|
Old_Zircon - 2017-11-25 Other books these couldn't hold a candle to when I was 5-6 (which is around when all of these these were first read to me by my dad):
Bunnicula series
The House With the Clock In Its Walls
Moby Dick
|
Marlon Brawndo - 2017-11-26 I hate to ruin your life but they are making a movie version of A House with a Clock in its Walls.
With Jack Black.
...I'm so sorry.
|
Old_Zircon - 2017-11-26 Doesn't affect me, I swore off ever seeing one of these adaptations around when the Stuart Little trailer came out.

It doesn't look bad, it just looks like I've already seen everything that happens in this movie in other movies.
I may go see it because of Oprah. If anyone needs my money, it's her.
