oh wow, I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Boston was a studio project more than an actual band, in that the touring band had little to no input on the album production. Guess not.

Yeah, I didn't think this was much of a surprise now. Like Toto being just a bunch of session musicians wanting a bigger piece of the pie.

And this was the same story for The Prodigy, Crystal Castles and allegedly Garbage - songs came first, find a person to front it and make it a band later.

Yeah, they literally taught us about this in college back inn the late 90s, this is absolutely common knowledge.

The Prodigy was upfront about who created the music from the get-go. Liam wrote everything, and the othe guys were literally listed as "dancers" and "hype men". They later started contributing musically, but at the beginning it was all Liam.

I actually got more respect for Foo Fighters when I learned that the first album came about when Dave Grohl stole an 8 track reel to reel from a local studio that had allegedly screwed him over in some way, set it up in his garage, and recorded the entire album himself, playing pretty much all the instruments.

Agreed about FF.. I really don't like any of their songs, but I have tons of respect for Grohl as a musician and human being.

I remember buying and liking their first album when it came out when i was in high school, and they have had some good singles since, but not a band i'm really into musically. But, i'm like IZ; Dave seems like a genuinely cool, talented and nice guy who deserves even more respect than than the large amount belatedly given him.

The issue is proper creditation & lies. See, when Trent Reznor was upfront about creating most of the music for Nine Inch Nails, we were fine with that. When Brian Transeau was upfront about creating all of the music for BT, we were fine with that. The problem s when bullshit bands like this create a fictitious band for marketing reasons. That's bullshit, and deserves to be called out.

Rock fans for some reason demand authenticity, especially with classic rock. They want all their bands to be rugged working class dudes, who were mates in high school, started in a garage, and worked their way through grimy clubs.

Boston were saddled with the "corporate rock" tag. As soon as their debut became a hot seller, no working-class roots could make up for their SOUNDING like a marketing schlub's new best friend. That Boston needed to contrive a touring band once the studio material became commercially lucrative compounded the problem.
