I heard an interview with a WWN staff writer, and he said it broke his heart how many people didn’t get the joke. Apparently they did hire genuine journalists, who would dutifully go out and interview people on a regional basis, but by the time it got back to the office, the staff writers would have picked out the most absurd part of the story and blow it out of proportion. Usually it started like “Local overweight woman achieves her goal weight”, and became “World’s fattest woman now an anorexic”, with completely different names and stock photography.
