Ugh - 2019-04-23 oh yeah i remember that one, all mussed up and looking like he was in the doors
there was a doozy of an interview on npr defending it too, attaching their rationale to demographics and whatnot as though young people even gave a shit about rolling stone in any capacity
hell last time i read stone it was because i'd already thumbed through the two issues of redbook next to it while i was waiting for someone to finish up at a salon
i guess it makes me even madder because i saw just how easily this stuff could be tamped down and the perpetrators essentially erased. i attended a high school a year after they had a shooting (this was also a year before columbine) and not only is the shooter still alive/imprisoned but nobody but the localest of locals to that area can really name him. school just did the necessary details and went radio silent, people were free to talk but the media got the cold shoulder from a ton of involved parties

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2019-04-24 The only thing people gave a shit about Rolling Stone for back around the Boston bombing was its political coverage, and even that was RS holding on to people like Matt Taibbi and Michael Hastings to maintain some presence in that area.
In hindsight, it's hard to believe anyone took Rolling Stone's musical interests seriously. The magazine started as Jann Wenner's stalking horse to meet John Lennon. The political stuff was partly there to add legitimacy to a magazine that only hired a reviews editor when Wenner realized stuff like Cat Yronwode sending stream-of-consciousness musings to RS' help-wanted section wouldn't attract advertisers.
In that respect, I see why RS put the Boston bomber on its cover. It's the standard "hey, we're still relevant to the public consciousness" piggyback where even if the attached journalism is good, the brand has already revealed its hand, and that hand wants to shift more units.

Old_Zircon - 2019-04-24 Last time I opened a Rolling Stone was the Metallica black album interview, and it was already irrelevant then.
|
Old_Zircon - 2019-04-24 And yeah, on music RS was always the magazine for people too square to read Creem.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-04-25 I had a subscription back in the late 70s, when the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were breaking, and that was a good time to be a subscriber. But that was a long time ago, wasn't it?
|
John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-04-25 Incidentally, i don't have a problem with the idea that Creem was not square enough for me.

Looks interesting, will watch and rate later, but now that Columbine's been brought up and I need to ask this:
Does anyone else remember an episode of the Sally Jessy Raphael show that aired after Columbine where one of the topics was about school's banning baggy clothes because students could be hiding guns, and they had a teenager stand perfectly still on stage in baggy clothes and he pulled out something like 10 guns from his pants, and each time the housewives in the audience gasped, and then he pulled out a three foot long shotgun and they lost their shit? I would kill to find this episode.

Ugh - 2019-04-23 o goodness i know i've seen that but the only thing that comes to mind is that i think it was part of a bunch of clips shown in bowling for columbine
could be off it's been a grip
|
Rosebeekee - 2019-04-23 I don't remember it being in bowling for Columbine, but I'll give it a quick glance. The image is burned in my mind because they teased the image of the kid pulling the shotgun out before every commercial break before finally getting to it.

|
badideasinaction - 2019-04-24 I remember the clip (or at least the kid producing a ridiculous number of guns, not the SJR show aspect), could have sworn it was on poetv but a quick search says it's not here anymore if it was.

Raggamuffin - 2019-04-24 this is the clip they used in bowling for columbine: https://youtu.be/kzedFoji9qg
|
Rosebeekee - 2019-04-25 @Raggamuffin It wasn't that, but it's basically the same thing, minus the collective gasps of hundreds of audience members. Thanks.

They want you to THINK it was all caused by Marilyn Manson and Doom but the puopetmasters controlling it behind the scenes were Ozzy and Negativland.

You could try
cracking down on bullying in schools
forcing the lamestream media to not hype up school shooters (when there's another incident, don't show the guy's face, don't talk about his troubled past, don't play his old home videos, etc. Say the guy)
prosecuting young criminals so they acquire criminal/psych records that block them from legally purchasing firearms. Help them start their prison careers early.
putting more cops in schools
|
Nikon - 2019-04-25 typo say the guy was a loser and that's it
|
SolRo - 2019-04-25 yeah totally need to turn kids into institutional criminals unable to get jobs as early as possible. And who cares if it will mostly end up effecting minorities.
Also I’m sure the NRA and their bought politicians won’t prevent any sort of gun restrictions in your idea, leaving only the draconian criminal penalties and lifelong records
|
Nikon - 2019-04-28 Stay on task. Prison reform is an entirely different issue. Let's fix one problem before going on to another.
|
Nikon - 2019-04-28 > totally need to turn kids into institutional criminals
>unable to get jobs as early as possible.
Have they tried not committing crimes? Just asking.
