I get into squabbles like this with my three year old all the time. I'm the fucking idiot cop, and it's always my fault. He's in the middle of doing his own thing and I say something stupid like "let's stop playing and go inside right now." Then he says "no, five more minutes," but I can't negotiate because I already said "right now" and I don't want to look wishy-washy. So
it escalates and pretty soon I'm getting all aggro on him for absolutely no reason, just to maintain my authority. It's so stupid, but that's exactly what's happening in this video: in this moronic cop's mind, de-escalation is the same as defeat, and defeat is unbearable. Left to his own devices, he would have killed this student eventually. At least I don't threaten to tase my kid, I guess.

I once got stopped by a cop at night in my driveway, as I was reaching through the window of my work van to grab a cig. He was a total douche, and after 15 minutes or so of being detained and trying to explain to this fuckstick that I did in fact live here and that was in fact my work van, his buddies on the other side of the fence said "let's go" and he fucked off. They had gotten a complaint that someone was snooping around my neighbors house, and after pounding on his door for 15 minutes my neighbor finally answered and basically told the police to fuck off and leave him alone.
That has been to date my shittiest experience with police officers, the shittiest because, this time, I was actually minding my business, in my own drive way. I can only imagine it would have been worse if I was black. I typically support the police, because lets be real, sometimes you need a cop, but shit like this makes me rethink all that.

We need cops who are trained to make sound judgements about their use of authority, and especially violence.
We don't need cops whose entire self-identities are based on the public obeying their commands.
Cop school needs to level up your WIS, not your DEX.

I swear there was a huge push since the 90s to bring israel defense force trainers to give classes to American police, and if the IDF is known for one thing it is their renowned ability to sympathize with ‘the other’ and de escalation training.

Scrimmjob - 2019-06-12 I remember the older cops of the last generation were way more, not laid back, but less likely to give you stupid fines, and try and get on your level to explain to you why you need to get a bike light or whatever. Again, I haven't had many problems with the police since I stopped being a teenage degenerate, but now most of the cops I see appear to be younger than I am, and they are by the book to the point that they may as well be robots. Also they tend to be stupid hardons.

Old_Zircon - 2019-06-12 A big part of it is because a few years into the current forever war, police forces started to realize that they could save a lot of money on training if they just changed their S.O.P. to be more like military training, and then hired heavily from the pool of returning troops. So you end up with a lot of beat cops whose training and experience tells them, among other things, to view civilians as potential threats.
