I went to this festival once, years back. It's still a short drive from where I live. It's such a low-key, blue-collar, generic fucking harvest festival. God fucking dammit. I can only assume the shooters figured it'd be a great chance to kill those darned brown people who stole the garlic-harvesting jobs they definitely couldn't hack doing themselves for four hours.

The "Binghamton Shootings" as they are imaginatively called, took place on a Friday Morning in 2009, about a block and a half from where I lived at the time, at the American Civic Association. This was mostly immigrants killed by an immigrant, so go figure. 14 dead, including the batshit crazy Perp, a Vietnam native who believed that the police were watching him sleep, and before the even sent an insane handwritten letter to a TV station beginning with the words "I AM JIVERLY WONG SHOOTING THE PEOPLE" All caps, no punctiation.
You can't imagine what a bland unimposing c1959 building the Civic Center offices are in. I must have passed by it for most of my life without taking notice. It looks like it might be a school, or a police station, or a post office, except that is none of these, so it is much more nondescript than any of them.
Maybe by coincidence, this is where they held the garlic festival for many years. They cancelled it for a couple of years after the shooting, but now it's back. Thing I might go this year.
