The true issue with NMS is not whether it has this feature or that features. It is that, though all the bits are well implemented (impressively so imo) the *game design* of everything from the core game loop to the UI is consistently bafflingly bad, as if they were designed by some weird alien who has never played a game before.
I'll give two examples, one big and one small, but this kind of stuff is *everywhere* you look in this game.
Big thing.
The core game loop is basically a roguelike, you get resources and use them to upgrade your shit so you can get more resources more efficiently.. Thats fine, but... there is no threat.. In a roguelike you need some sort of threat or challenge (normally monsters). The threat motivates you to git gud and level up, and most importantly adds a risk/reward mechanic, you could grind up slowly, or, excitingly risk high level mobs for more extravagant loot and more xp.. NMS does not have this, at all, so the game is just 100% grind.. srsly having a roguelike without a threat is having a game without any challenge, its like designing a 3 legged stool with only 2 legs.
Small thing
in NMS you dont click on stuff in the UI, you *hold down* the left-mouse button for a second... why god why?? why would you do this?!?! We have been left-clicking on stuff fine for 50 years. Why would you decide to contravene this incredibly well established convention? Not only that, but it requires more input from the player for the same outcome. Ideally you want the most to happen in the game (or any UI) from the smallest possible input from the player.
I could understand doing the hold down in maybe one place, for like self destruct button, or erase save games (though a confirmation popup would work better) but they do it almost everywhere. Yes, almost, *sometimes* you do just left click normally also, just to make shit even more confusing and inconsistent.
So great looking game, really impressive features, but constant bizarre, baffling, in a bad way, design of everything. Im only giving those two examples so I dont crash poetv with the amount of text, but those bizarre design choices are everywhere.
