Chicken the Did - 2020-01-14
I gotta knock on wood myself. Cincinnati is having a rental boom where single bedrooms now go for 1800 a month. The place I got now is a honey of a deal at about 550 a month and a really nice building in a good area. But because 'good area' developers are starting to swoop in. I overheard some twat from the valley last week saying "Yeah it sucks but the way housing works is all supply and demand and that's capitalism. And if you hear anybody say this system should be interfered with you have found a fool. Take note." So in other words, "Fuck you, I got mine. It's working for me so don't you dare mess with it."

Hazelnut - 2020-01-14 Now to be fair it could be honest concern that ham-handed interference in the property market can be even worse: you get corruption, you get landlords doing their damnedest to evict tenants to game the rent control rules, you even get arson.
But yeah, it does sound like the twat in question is just a putz.

Cena_mark - 2020-01-14 Pretty much, like how developers stopped building starter houses in favor of Mcmansions

Nominal - 2020-01-15 I had an ex-friend who hustled his way into a position he wasn't qualified for out of high school, but from there he made business contacts with revolving CEOs who keep hiring each other whenever the new startup to drive into the ground comes up. So he quickly went from no college degree to six figures.
Good on him, but good god did he turn into the biggest yuppie prick. He went to a $1000 breeder to get a puppie, saying "It's more prestigious than going to a shelter. You don't know what kind of problems you're getting there." (FUCK Bill Burr for pushing that shit).
Then he started looking into buying far off properties so he could become an absentee landlord. When I was talking in favor of rent control, he brought up the usual "That's just the free market. You should be able to charge whatever people will pay." Yes, "whatever people will pay" to not be homeless, because rent seeking always makes for strong economies and selling shelter is exactly like selling widgets.
He married an equally empathetic woman. Someone who really struggled with parents offering to outright buy her a house, and who had my friend support her while she went back to grad school. When I brought up how Bank of America's policy of charging you money for not having a $1000 minimum balance was bullshit, she piped up with the gem "Well just have more than $1000 in the bank all the time!"

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-01-16 Also, I wouldn't say "fuck capitalism" but rather fuck hypercapitalism. The new model has been unstable since Clinton tore up Glass Steagall, which allowed the madness of the real estate market to sell subprime mortgages to begin with to occur in the first place.
Both parties have trashed our ability to have mass social mobility. And the homeless situation is going to explode into plague if Newsom doesn't hurry the fuck up.

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-01-16 "to occur" not "to begin with to occur".
I promise I'm not drunkposting.
