This might seem trivial next to all the crazy shit in the States like the murder in Minneapolis, but it’s a Big Deal over here.

How to explain this? The British coronavirus response has been based on a collective “we’re all in this together” WWII-esque spirit. People voluntarily stuck to the rules even at horrifying personal cost, and this helped compensate for the feeble government response. Then Cummngs shits all over that: the supposed anti-elitists acts like rules are for the little people.

What really interests me is how BETRAYED Boris voters feel. Isn’t that weird? They knew he was a liar when they elected him in December. I think it’s that when he lied about the EU and people like me complained they felt they were in on the joke, owning those city libs. Now they feel like they -are- the joke, or the joke’s on them, and that’s not a good feeling.

I further suspect many American Trump supporters defend him so aggressively because the alternative is that same feeling: to acknowledge they’ve been played for a fool. Same reason victims of scammers find it so hard to acknowledge what happened.

I hope they grow up soon!! Or at least stay home in November.

I think you're underestimating how effective the American education system is at stamping out self awareness and critical thought at a young age.

You may be right. :-(

I've been reading about this. Yes, compared to the shit here in the states it's kinda trivial, but it's infuriating nonetheless.

I hadn't heard that Boris voters were feeling betrayed, though. Seriously? They thought the face-eating leopards wouldn't eat THEIR faces?

I doubt they are that self-aware. It's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned.

A weird thing here is a lot of December’s Boris voters were first-time Tory voters, kinda like the old ‘Reagan Democrats’. Some of that was Brexit, some of that was (justified and unjustified) disgust at Corbyn.

Now that Keir Starmer has shown himself a capable if boring human being (and apologised for Labour’s shameful handling of antisemitism), the whole pandemic reveals the Tory con in all its ugliness.
