Holy hell.

Two Jar Slave - 2020-08-21

Yup.

I was especially scared [SPOILER, I guess] that she was supposed to actually be portraying a black character for a minute. Not that this is particularly better.

Not that it excuses anything, but blackface was still a pretty big thing in entertainment in the 1930s. Hell, the BBC had a very popular weekly TV show called, "The Black and White Minstrel Show" which wasn't canceled until 1978. And yes. It featured blackface until the end.

Yeah, it's horrifyingly bad in retrospect, but it's a part of history from which we can learn (maybe).

Marlon Brawndo - 2020-08-22

I'm guessing that might be a show which the BBC "accidentally" deleted in their archive purge.

Old_Zircon - 2020-08-22

The whole history of minstrelsy is a lot more complex than most people realize. Especially its ties to the abolitionist movement, as summarized here:

Holy fuck.

Rosebeekee - 2020-08-22

This is even more depressing when you realize she’s 16 and this is about her 6th film credit. I can’t imagine she was in a position to say anything resembling a “no”.

il fiore bel - 2020-08-22

It was her fourth film credit, and she was 15 when it was released. Not that it's any less fucked up.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2020-08-23

No, that's MORE fucked up!
