Not that it excuses anything, but blackface was still a pretty big thing in entertainment in the 1930s. Hell, the BBC had a very popular weekly TV show called, "The Black and White Minstrel Show" which wasn't canceled until 1978. And yes. It featured blackface until the end.
Yeah, it's horrifyingly bad in retrospect, but it's a part of history from which we can learn (maybe).
This is even more depressing when you realize she’s 16 and this is about her 6th film credit. I can’t imagine she was in a position to say anything resembling a “no”.
