I suppose he knew his career was doomed from the moment he saw whatever specific kompromat terrified him into a Trump cum-guzzler. From that, his best bet was to burn down the country and hope he didn't burn with it. That didn't seem to work, but at least, from his perspective, he squeezed in a few more years' worth of grift.
