Northern Ontario is full of these decaying little monuments from the roadhouse era. There are at least a dozen of these outside of my hometown.

The lots lose their property value, then they just go down to a state of total disrepair because no one will buy, no one will rent, and it's just a hole you're losing money on so the owners don't bother, vagrants move in, cops don't give a shit because it's not worth enforcing.
