The effects of 40 kt nuclear weapon-induced heating and shockwave on mammals at 50 and 150 meters

J. Schweinhass et al, 1957

Abstract
With the advent of the nuclear age, the exact effects of nuclear weapons on organisms similar to humans have been needed to determine the risks such weapons present, but data has thus far been limited to anecdotal reports. Here we present the first study of the effects of nuclear weapon-induced heating and shockwave on mammals, using the juvenile pig (n = 20, mean mass 15.4 kg) as the test animal. Pigs were held in PK restraints at ground level at two distances from the epicenter of a 40 kt nuclear weapon detonation. 100% of pigs exposed at 50 m (10 of 10), and 90% of pigs exposed at 150 m (9/10) experienced mortality. Although we expect this mortality is due to blast exposure, we cannot state with certainty these results were due to the heating or the shockwave due to the lack of control pigs at either 50 or 150 m. It is critical that future work be undertaken swiftly, including control pigs and pigs at intermediate distances (ie 51, 52 m, etc), in order to determine the exact distance at which 100% mortality is achieved.
