Do/did navy ships use a lot of vacuum tubes?

The Mothership - 2021-01-26

Must have done.

Scrimmjob - 2021-01-26

They did through the 70's at least. A guy who I used to work for had a circular scar on his arm where a vacuum tube exploded and the top went into his arm. He was in the navy in the 70's.

Neat! Sent a link to my dad. He's an engineering-type from the Tubes Age.

Architeuthis Tux - 2021-01-26

Pretty much required if you maintain one Americas nuclear power plants which still use tubes. I don't know how many there are, but they definitely exist.

Architeuthis Tux - 2021-01-26

Yeaaah. That reply was intended for simon666.

Go me.

TeenerTot - 2021-01-27

I'll take the reply. It's been awhile since I've had human contact.

Fuckin' pandemic, man.

simon666 - 2021-01-26

Is there a practical use for this thing to test tubes from tube amps?

Scrimmjob - 2021-01-26

yes, the guy I mentioned above had 2 or 3 different tube testers like this for just that purpose.

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2021-01-26

I had one of those tubes! It cast lines like the hands on a clock

I probably still have mine, it came out of a piece of test equipment I had long ago, given to me by friends of my mom's who knew I was into electronics.

I don't remember what the test equipment was, but these were used in things like tape decks and I'm sure at radio stations, because I'm sure they could show peak audio levels more accurately than any meter with a pointer.
