Those of us who live in the sticks have a much harder time joining the Amazon/WalMart/whatever boycotts, but anyone who lives in a city can and should do.

(Not that you inconveniencing yourself with a boycott will make one iota of difference to companies. Ultimately what we need are firmer environmental and labour regulations and, as this video makes clear, strong unions.)

Personal responsibility for corporate abuse and environmental damage is a tactic meant to distract those who care from systemic solutions.

It doesn't mean you should completely give up, but if the average consumer shops 10% less from Amazon it makes a bigger impact than a handful of people 100% exorcising them from their life.

Yeah, I admit I'm skeptical too about the efficacy of boycotts, but hell we have to start _somewhere_. (The same applies to voting, marching, advocacy, you name it.) Generally if enough people in enough places do what they can to move the needle, sooner or later sometimes needles move.

As long as you can be generally better (in your esteem) than the average, you're moving the average in the right direction. You don't have to be a saint, but you do have to try.

So vote, buy less stuff, eat less meat, shop local when you can, reuse what you can, recycle the rest, ride the bus or bike, etc. You can even feel a little guilty that you're not doing more, just don't let it paralyze you or cause you to give up.
