1 Star for nazi bullshit

Mister Yuck - 2021-10-21

Jesus. This clean Wermacht propaganda was in a Call of Duty game? I guess I shouldn't be surprised CoD would be full of Nazi sympathizing horseshit, but I am. Disgusting.

I seem to remember a few complaints about a wolfenstein game being too mean to nazis or something not that long ago??

casualcollapse - 2021-10-21

Yeah and I thought the conclusion of it was as long as the Nazis are painted clearly as the bad guys then it was no problem, this game is trying to blur that line

#notallnazis

I remember an acquaintance of mine who had a fascination with DC's Joker. He liked the evil nature, the threatening aura, the gaunt sex appeal, and the clown colored pimp suit. and loved to tell me details of stories like when Barbara Gordon is raped in the Killing Joke. If you search online, there are people defending the Joker's character, like they identify with him and don't think he was rapey despite the implication of it. They see a fantasy version of themselves in this character and will debate whether it's edgy or toxic.

Nazi fans are kind of like this. They like the nationalism and the concept of white superiority, the sexy and threatening costuming of the military, and the perception of Nazis being bullied underdogs who were ganged up on by the mean old US military. They see themselves in Nazis and they like it.

This was, in fact, deliberate. Read up on the Nazi graphic style guides, they knew what they were doing and used psychology to sell the look. It's not like it came out of nowhere.

Well at least I can recognize it

Adham Nu'man - 2021-10-22

Jesus Christ are you Americans really so indoctrinated that the mere depiction of Nazi soldiers as human beings is truly so controversial to you?

You literally truly believe that a country filled with millions of people they were ALL individually evil and rotten to the core like cartoon James Bond villains?

Yes, Nazis were bad (DUH!), yes, I love shooting Nazis as much as the next average fucker, but this depiction doesn't seem controversial at all nor is it a glorification of Nazis (or even anything that would remotely appeal to white supremacists). If anything, it's the depiction that within a deeply racist systemic hierarchy individuals who might otherwise be decent people become part of the structure that supports atrocities.

Jesus Christ people, get a grip on yourselves.

Pretty much the whole damn country participated in the Holocaust. There were evil. I get that Germany wasn't populated by cartoon villains. Fascism turned millions of ordinary people into murderers. It's terrifying. That little epilogue at the end implies the German soldiers were just following orders and their deaths were needless and tragic. And they were needless. But those soldiers were willing, enthusiastic supporters of genocide. Fuck them.

Adham Nu'man - 2021-10-22

I imagine the American public took to the streets en masse to protest the Nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Mister Yuck - 2021-10-24

If you want to play the moral relativism game with the Holocaust... Okay... Then the correct American genocides to compare it with would be slavery and the destruction of the American Indian society. I have absolutely no problem saying that every American who participated in them was an evil bastard and no video game should portray them as tragic victims. If you want a really direct comparison you could have talked about the American occupation and counter guerilla war in the Philippines, which also involved concentration camps, racist violence, and torture. Every American involved in that can eat shit, except of course for the couple of incredibly brave Buffalo Soldiers who deserted and joined the Philippino guerrillas, those guys are great.

Instead you brought up the atomic bombing of Japan, which, while terrible, has at least some justification as less awful than an invasion of the island. It's also completely incomparable because only a handful of Americans had advanced knowledge the bombings or participated in them.

As for being indoctrinated by American propaganda, well, the American propaganda in this case was actually the rehabilitation of the Wermacht. Americans in the 50s were so scared of the Soviets that they decided to rebuild the West German army to fight them. They went ahead and commuted a bunch of war criminals' sentences and staffed the new Bundeswehr with a bunch of veteran officers... aka fucking Nazis. To justify this, they rewrote history to place all the blame for the Holocaust on the Gestapo and the S.S., burying the fact that the officer corps of their new army were a bunch of war criminals.

The worst part about it was it was just interesting enough for me to watch it all the way to the very end
