Yes people sleep by nuclear reactors all the time for long periods at a time and they don't have any ill effects from it at all. Look at those who spend months at a time living in nuclear submarines.

I get it, there were two bad examples of nuclear reactors. One was built by the USSR and was an absolute shit reactor built substandard and would have never been built west of the iron curtain. The other was built in a bad location in Japan, but with all due respect faced an earthquake orders of magnitude more powerful than Japan had ever thought would ever happen in their country. It's one thing to build for a magnitude 8, but a magnitude 9 is 33 times more powerful than an 8, and is very difficult to build for. As far as TMI? It wasn't nearly as bad as the others, thankfully.

That said I wonder how many fans of the USSR would defend what happened and what could have happened in Chernobyl.

The NIMBY effect of Nuclear is pretty tragic because most people do not understand how it even works or how safe it actually is. All it is is a controlled nuclear reaction in water which creates steam. It's very clean, there's very few byproducts of it, and if Chernobyl was built to western standards it would have never happened. Fukushiima was built in the wrong place. But lessons have been learned.

It's also pretty tragic because in order to get off of fossil fuels, we need an all of the above solution for alternatives. Nuclear is the way to go to bridge us into more renewable energy and to get off of fossil fuel, but since people can't understand how it works, people formulate some pretty dumb opinions against it.

My five stars are for the evil of cruise ships, not nuclear.

I blame The Simpsons.

More recently, I blame the HBO miniseries Chernobyl for being an excellent drama that unfortunately spread a bunch of misinformation about nuclear power.
