I think I watched this one when it came out. One striking fact from it was the history around pensions and the 401k. If I am recalling correctly, 401k was lobbied for by IBM (or Xerox or someone) originally as a supplement to the pension. The rub is that companies started eliminating pensions and offering solely 401k's, since it shifted a big financial burden off their books and onto the employee; but this resulted in the employee having less money to retire.

John Oliver's piece on 401k's and managed funds like 5 years ago really changed things for me.
Hired an actual fiduciary advisor for several sessions and learned how to ask people to roll my 401k dollars into accounts where I have much saner choices.
I totally empathize with not knowing what good choices are with this shit, it's horrible, but it's maddening watching people plonk their savings into stocks, some may do OK, but most really won't.
I can't overstate the importance of just paying someone that has an actual obligation to help you to help you, I guess that requires enough self-awareness to acknowledge when you're out of your depth?
