Coincidental side note: Yesterday afternoon at dusk, I saw a peregrine just barely miss a mourning dove.

The falcon made the mistake of trying to nail the dove while it was perched in a tree. Avoiding the small branches slowed the falcon down enough that the dove was able to drop off the branch and wing it to a nearby bush.
