I would've thought that he'd be more articulate on the matter.

Anaxagoras - 2022-06-25

Shut up.

The Eagles were isolationists. They did finally agree to a lend-lease program.

Simillion - 2022-06-26

Gwaihir noticed Gandalf on top of Saruman’s tower and agreed to rescue him, but would only take him as far as Edoras in Rohan. Then, he noticed Gandalf on top of the peak of Zirak-zigil, after he defeated the Balrog, and agreed to take him on another short trip to Lothlorien. When Gandalf asked Gwaihir to help rescue Sam and Frodo from Mount Doom, it was with a promise to never ask him for anything else ever again. “Twice you have borne me, Gwaihir my friend, [...] Thrice shall pay for all, if you are willing,” he said to the Windlord in The Return of the King.

Like most of how Gandalf flexes power in The Lord of the Rings, it’s not about magic, but about politicking. The giant eagles of Middle-earth aren’t beasts to tame, like Shadowfax; they have their own society and concerns. And just like literally everyone else in the story, it takes a lot of work to get them to care about all this Dark Lord stuff until it affects them directly. The eagles can’t carry the Fellowship to Mordor because Gandalf can’t simply summon a squadron of birds to divebomb Mount Doom.

I have a feeling this is a really good fake, but if it's not, I'll bet he got annoyed at the question because he explains why right there in the fucking book.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2022-06-25

Yeah I agree with fake.
1. someone recording an interview in 50's or 60's would have had better quality recording equipment and microphone. This sounds like they overdid with the old-timey filters, sounds like a freakin' wax cylinder!
2. I have no idea, but Tolkien being such a bumbling speaker seems odd, I reckon its just like that as its scripted for maximum comedy value.

Anaxagoras - 2022-06-25

No, Tolkien knew that the answer given in the book is kinda inadequate; in private letters (that have since been made public) he goes into a much deeper answer, describing both the story-driven reason "It would trivialize the quest" as well as a more thoughtful in-universe discussion of the eagles.

As for the crappy sound quality, I've noticed that a lot of recordings from pre 1980 are this crappy; I'm guessing most of the recordings, even when professionally done, degrade over time.

In any case, yeah, it's almost definitely fake, but I *want* to believe.

The eagles are there to give the reader a happy ending.

If they weren’t there then the main characters die.

Readers hate sad endings.

That’s all.

Gmork - 2022-07-01

Not to mention maybe they could have done so if it weren't for the eye of sauron, the nazgul flying on their fell beasts, etc. By the time all those threats were dealt with, Gandalf wasn't in a position to even consult the eagles, geographically or otherwise. Supposing he even was, there's still the matter of not knowing where the fuck frodo even was, if he was still alive, etc.
