So, Namibia seems like a pretty cool place to visit. 2nd least population density country in the world. A lot of cool parks. Skeleton Coast. You can just rent a car and drive around the desert. People speak english enough that you can get around (thanks, colonialism). Just stumbled on the live watering hole feed still in the hopper and went on a wikipedia kick, but seriously thinking of going there.

literally all my vacation ideas are "where can I go where there isn't anyone"
I miss montana/wyoming.

for all eternity, or until sand and moisture destroys this equipment?

garcet71283 - 2022-10-11

Or some random dude takes what looks like $1000s of dollars worth of stuff to feed his family…

casualcollapse - 2022-10-11

One day, some dudes gonna start a thread on four Chan, and it’s gonna get found and destroyed

The Namib is one the most arid places on the planet, so I don't think the rains down in africa will be a problem. And, given the remoteness and size of the desert, I'm not sure there's much a hundred men or more could ever do to locate and destroy it.

Also this looks like it cost maybe $300.

Desert sunlight annihilates anything not made of metal or stone in months

Gmork - 2022-10-13

By moisture I don't mean precipitation but the extreme cold of the desert and condensate in the air. If the cycle goes on long enough even with only a little moisture, that setup is toast

Not to mention that it's solar powered so you're not going to hear the drums echo into night. It'll sound like whispers of a quiet conversation, at best.

I upvoted to say that this cheap shit will probably function for a few days maybe, and then perhaps months until no trace of it remains.
* Looks like cheap computer speakers + white boxes are plywood.
* Will get covered in shifting sand dunes and crushed
* Will get eroded by brutal windborne sand.
* Will be destroyed by brutal desert heating/cooling cycle.

You've never really encountered installation art before, have you?

ashtar. - 2022-10-12

Yeah, I feel like the cheap and half-assed nature of the work is part of it. I mean, it's designed to play a very dumb pop song written by a guy who had never been to Africa in the middle of the oldest desert in the world. The scare quotes around "for all eternity" feel deliberate.

Something about the ephemeral nature of stuff, colonialism, and probably like, liminal spaces? There's usually some liminal spaces. Love a liminal space.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2022-10-12

A desert isn't liminal, It's the desert. The ur-destination. You've arrived.

Feels like Toto's soundtrack to Dune (1984) would be more fitting.
