the first time Trump calls him "Miss Florida" his career is over

Quad9Damage - 2022-11-11

I'll never forget the first time I actually sat down and watched a Trump speech. After he got elected and the ensuing toilet explosion started, I buried my head in the sand, deciding that I would ignore as much noise as possible for the next four years. My head stayed buried until the night Biden picked Harris as his running mate, and I decided to tune in to hear Trump's response.

Five minutes in:

"Hey hon?" I called out.

"Yeah?" the voice of my wife, on the other side of the house, replied.

"...Who's Pocahontas?"

And that was when it started to sink in for me, really. I know, I know, very late to the game, whatever. But as far as I knew, this was the first U.S. president in history to refer to people with memes and nicknames. The President was a Twitter troll. He took bait from other Twitter trolls and echoed it back.

So yeah, that's gonna be the whole primary, isn't it? Miss Florida. Effeminate Everglades. Rump Ronnie. And cue picket signs outside campaign headquarters.

Since my family moved here in 1982, the population has more than doubled from just over 10 million to nearly 22 million.

About 8 million people here are White. About 2 million of those are college-educated. These are the people who hold the most sway, politically, even though they make up less than half of the population.

While the population of Florida has increased steadily over the past 40 years, we experienced a major influx of middle-class White conservatives following the election of Donald Trump as President. Ron DeSantis is the direct cause of that.

In his first campaign for Governor, DeSantis echoed many of Trump's dog whistles. His most famous campaign ad involved DeSantis urging his toddler to, "Build that wall," with toy blocks. During the pandemic, he declared Florida would keep schools open, wouldn't have lock downs, wouldn't make you wear a mask and wouldn't require vaccinations.

It was like a big smelly pile of dog shit that drew in all the MAGA flies.

The Democrats dropped the ball here. From day one, they should have been pointing out that DeSantis is actually a pretty shitty Governor. He hardly ever does his fucking job. Like Trump, he is in campaign mode 24/7. He's constantly catering to his base.

He's claiming responsibility for keeping Florida's economy going during the pandemic while never mentioning we're only in good shape thanks to a huge influx of federal funding. Funding DeSantis hands out like candy to his base while ignoring people who really need it.

He continually spouts culture war bullshit. He whips up the racists, homophobes and religious zealots. He alludes to QAnon conspiracies and attacks the "woke" mob.

When DeSantis does do any actual work, it's things that harm the people of Florida. He fucked over homeowners by making it harder to rake deadbeat insurance companies to court when they refuse to pay out for hurricane damage. On top of that, he also gave the insurance companies a big pile of money. He's pushed legislation that has allowed Florida Power & Light to monopolize and price-gouge. He carved up the two Democrat-leaning districts who had voted against him in 2018.

He cancelled tax exemption for Disney's special district meaning the people living there will now have to pay for services like fire protection, schools, etc. and those services will, of course, be worse than the ones Disney provided. And why did he do this? Because Disney said it had no problem with trans people.

Did the Democrats bring any of this up during the campaign? Fuck no! They chose a FORMER FUCKING REPUBLICAN as their gubernatorial candidate and just sort of went around with their thumbs up their asses. Would a more aggressive progressive campaign have beaten DeSantis? Maybe not, but it would have been a closer election, for sure.

The only silver lining from the 2022 midterms is that the "red wave" turned out to be a ripple. Hopefully, DeSantis' style of politics won't fly on a national level when he runs for President in 2024.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-11

If you say so. I have no idea what kind of batshit politics you need to win in Florida these days.

Ron Santis is probably smarter than he looks, because he looks like a moron. He looks like the mayor of Dogpatch. He looks Junior Samples and Maude Frickert had a kid.

Binro the Heretic - 2022-11-11

It took two things to win Florida:

1 - Appeal to the extremist assholes. The moderate Republican voters will vote for anyone with an "R" next to their name. You don't have to worry about losing a lot of them if you go full-on evil. Reach out to the racists who hate and fear anyone who isn't White. Pander to the hateful turds who want to kill or at least imprison all LGBTQ+ people. Appeal to the misogynists angry at all women because they don't have girlfriends. Never mind that they are awful and see women as things, not people and never do anything to make themselves less awful. It's not their fault, it's the women's fault for having standards and free will.

2 -A lethargic centrist Democratic party.

"I'm God, and I approved this message."

Quad9Damage - 2022-11-11

"God has no problem with your kids choking to death on a virus."

Binro the Heretic - 2022-11-11

I know you're being facetious, but he really doesn't.

God will choke your child to death with a virus then condemn you to Hell for eternity if you get angry at him for doing it.

God is a Lovecraftian cosmic horror.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2022-11-11

Wow, you really ARE a heretic!

yogarfield - 2022-11-11

@binro Counterpoint: God might be celibate, but he's certainly not antisemitic and that puts him outside the realm of anything HP penned.

SolRo - 2022-11-11

I dunno man, seems like god was a bit of a whore during the biblical times.
