Menudo con queso - 2007-09-12

I guess if this is what we do to them, it's only fair that they kill a few of us from time to time.

SolRo - 2007-09-13

I'd eat that, if I could afford it.

Love sushi.

Gojira1000 - 2007-09-13

Technically that's sashimi, not sushi. But I want to see the little live minnows we used to drink in cups of rice wine. Those were nasty. Or the little pickled aquarium catfish that came in a big pickled-egg-style jar full of amber mystery fluid.

SolRo - 2007-09-13

I know that, but in general all that stuff is called sushi.

In conversation you go out to eat sushi, not sashimi, maki rolls, nigiri-zushi, gunkan-maki, etc.

craptacular - 2007-09-13

its WAR between gojira1000 and solro! who knows more about japan ?

Gojira1000 - 2007-09-14

Fag dance alert. Sashimi is raw fish without rice. Sushi is *insert topping usually raw fish* on pressed rice. Maki rolls are what are called California Rolls here - though rolls in N. America are way more diverse (and usually better) than those in Japan. Onigiri are generally inside-out sushi. Anything ending in -don is often a bowl of rice with something on top, which can include raw fish (e.g. magurodon, which is raw tuna atop a bowl of rice). Do not confuse with udon, which is a type of noodle.

But call it what you want. The naming conventions in Japan for western foods are equally inaccurate and as amusing to natives.
