These things waylayed us in Costa Rica. An entire family of them blocked the road and refused to move until we gave them food. In the end, about 5 tourist cars and 2 local milktrucks had pulled over and everyone, even the locals, were feeding the little cuddlies until they lifted the cutest embargo ever. Pura Vida.

I've always wondered how the striped tail evolved in general. Camoflage, just a genetic oddity? Anyway, these things are cute.

Coatis are cute, and can be kept as pets, but it takes a certain dedicated person to live with them them as they are the very incarnation of the phrase "innocently destructive."

Raccoons strike one as cute and personable at first, but once they become accustomed they make very poor house guests. I guess it's the same with coatimundis.
