Interesting report, but its good to know the noticeably absent context.

The Cleveland Trust Company (the bank and affiliates) were blackmailing the city into selling its public utilities to their private group by leveraging debts that had been routinely dormant for years. Kucinich stood up to the group and in so doing, took a big popularity hit, but ended up preserving the utilities and saving the city and its people millions of dollars.

Also, due to his refusal to sell the utilities, a mafia hit was put on his life, but fell apart when Kucinich missed the event due to illness. Selling the utilities would have solved his political and economic problems, but would have passed the burden onto future citizens and broken his campaign promise not to sell off the utilities.

Also, he was out of office after only 2 years as mayor:

I still think I'd rather have had Kucinich's brand of crazy over the past 7 years.

ZawBanjito - 2008-01-19

He broke Cleveland? I may end up voting for him after all.

glendower - 2008-01-19

Five stars for publicly closing his account. We need more mayors with this kind of pizazz.

His brother took to painting and died last month, God bless him.

I don't understand how Kucinich continues to get re-elected here in the 10th Congressional District. Nearly every single person I know, both Left and Right, hates the guy as they have for the past 10 or so years he's been Congressman. He constantly gets criticized all over local talk radio. Even I think he's pretty ineffectual.

But five stars for him not bending over to the banks. FUCK YOU, CAPITALISM.

It's like that with Lieberman here, only, y'know, without the New Agery, UFOs, and Shirley MacLaine.

Without police, crime will rule Cleveland. So I guess it didn't make much of a difference.
