how did he trigger the notes at the start? Since he didn't use the strum button and you have to use it while a button is pressed down to set off the notes.

Ben is a well known Guitar Hero player and posts on Score Hero and such. That's the standard way of tapping the intro, you either hit the strum bar with your elbow or move your arm very quickly after strumming the first red note.
It's called "hammer ons" and is new to GH3. Just like Kirk Hammet!
This kid is good, and I bet if he had the interest, he'd be a good guitarist. He certainly has the timing and hand/finger dexterity, and the ability to "read" "music". Anyway, if he was motivated, he'd be good. Hopefully his parents will encourage that.

Sadly I have never played this game because these new consoles give me sadness. It looks like it's hard. It looks intense. The child boy seems to be happy with his accomplishments.
I hope that if aliens ever decide to destroy the earth, they first challenge our greatest champion to a Guitar Hero duel.
When it's too late, we'll learn that the aliens have a secret third arm and superhuman reflexes. But after some tense moments, this kid will still win.
