A 1977 Newsweek article: “taken in moderation, cocaine probably causes no significant mental or physical damage and a number of researchers have concluded that it can be safer than liquor and cigarettes when used discriminately.”

I read about a 1981 Newsweek cover story that said that coke best reflected American values of individualism, energy, exuberance, hard work, etc. I can't seem to find it right now and I'm too lazy to keep googling.
