Regularly feeding wild animals as this "safari guide" character apparently does, particularly dangerous ones, is nearly always a bad decision as it desensitizes them to humans and encourages them to become more aggressive and enter more urbanized areas in search of an easy meal.
Also, that American tourist with the headlamp obviously has EARMITES.
Native Africans have essentially been feeding hyenas for centuries..leaving offal and even dead bodies outside of villages, since they know the critters can dispose of pretty much anything.
That said, you're absolutely right about the desensitizing. (And probably the earmites.)
