One of the greatest comedy skits ever. This is their version, in which they show off their burlesque roots.

A Lou Costello version is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPGrTVI7s1k It has a great buildup but too little payoff to submit. Still fun if you like the joke.

ps. When I was a kid, my parents used to laugh and quote this general skit whenever I mentioned Niagara Falls, then infuriate me by refusing to tell me what they were laughing about. I only figured it out a few weeks ago. Hi mom and dad!

I'd like to see a compilation of performances, "Aristocrats"-style. Google says there have been some truly epic renditions.

My brothers and I used to do this skit when we were kids.

SLOWLY I TURNED...STEP BY STEP...INCH BY INCH

My dad used to watch this repeatedly when I was very little and it cracked me up. It still does.

My dad looked for the entire short that this clip came from ("Gents Without Cents") for literally decades. He found it a few years ago on Usenet.

Thanks, Internet!

(also, Curly Howard is totally underrated as a physical comedian by the Buster Keaton/Harold Lloyd/Charlie Chaplin fans out there)

Camonk - 2008-04-19

Really? Those guys are dicks. Curly Howard has always been the yardstick by which I judge physical comedians.

Jeff Fries - 2008-04-19

My dad used to act this out with my mom where she was Curly and she didn't really have to say anything.

KnowFuture - 2008-04-19

Supposedly they were really hitting each other a lot of the time.

Syd Midnight - 2008-04-19

I'd guess Moe hit for real, Curly got hit for real, and Larry tried to avoid pissing off Moe.

KnowFuture - 2008-04-19

By the time Larry died he had a (Moe's) hand-shaped scar on his face from being slapped over and over.

A guy who was a presenter at a Three Stooges festival told me.

What was the name of that one made-for-TV 3 Stooges bio? I gave up looking on Google after 5 minutes. It was awesome, it implied their personalities IRL weren't that different from their characters. Moe felt justified being an abusive asshole because he was an effective leader, Larry was a great guy who'd grudginglyput up with anything for a job in showbiz, Shemp was severely depressed and frightened with low self esteem and Curly.. poor Curly.. his tale will make you cry.

Curly Joe was just honored to be asked to be a Stooge. I stopped hating him after hearing his side.

I read 2nd hand in an interview that when Larry had a stroke that took him out of the Stooges and away from Moe, he afterwards called it his "stroke of luck".

You all talk about your fathers doing this routine, I do this bit all the time, now I feel old. Thanks, POE!

Syd Midnight - 2008-04-26

You're only (95 years) old if you remember it being a brand new bit. A skit like this is timeless.
