1/3 giant robot dogfights, 2/3 romantic BS.

Has anyone ever made an anime about military tranformer robot jet fighters and the troubled people who fly them without a junior high secret crush subplot? If so, tell me and I'll watch it.

Also, points off for the little Dragonball Z powerup yell he does as he runs off at the end. POINTS. OFF.

Gundam 0080.

Had a romance subplot, but not a secret crush. And the main character was a 10 year old boy who was more interested in the cool robots than girls. But I suppose it technically wasn't a robot anime, since it focused on the effects of war on civilians.

G-Gundam.

There is romance, but it's strictly in the backdrop. The main show is about crazy-ass fighting robots based on international stereotypes. England's pilot is a tea-sipping proper English gentleman with a horrible pill addiction who pilots the John Bull Gundam.

Don't forget that they always, always must ultimately be resolved by SINGING J-POP.

The absolute nadir of this was that one Macross movie with the guy who'd rather use his giant robot to play his guitar for people instead of blowing them up, though that one about the killer pop diva AI was pretty awful too.

gundam 00, it's sorta emo but pretty much everyone dies by the end

That's Macross's schtick. Singing Girls and Minmai.

Gundam and Gundamn Zeta lack the secret high school crush plot.

In exchange you just get to enjoy the fruits of Yoshiyuki Tomino's crippling and only recently medicated depression.

I would really like to see Exo Squad get this kind of production value treatment, ditching the action figure look.

And the haircuts. Those godawful haircuts.

I guess Evangelion, too, as all the relationships on that show are either awkward, creepy, and unrequited, or horribly doomed.

Better than... I don't know, whatever you ladies wet yourselves over when it comes to giant robots.
