What a great fucking scene. The first time I saw this, on video many years ago, I have to admit I broke down hysterically when Gregory Peck was stabbing Moby Dick. A reaction like that to a movie is something that happens about twice a decade for me.

Also, why is John Huston not given super-auteur status? Some of his movies are as high in the "canon" as anyone's (Maltese Falcon, Sierra Madre) but people go on and on about, say, John Ford.

Huston is definitely recognized as one of America's greatest writer-directors but Ford has the sweeping epics down. I don't really think you can compare them, they are both great in such different ways.
