This happened in Hartford Conneticut yesterday, I believe, and it's fucked in so many ways. Guy is probably going to die, if not already dead. I realize it's graphic, but I didn't submit this as some "OH COOL" kind of thing and it's also being shown, uncut repeatedly, all over network and cable news.

Monchiles Monchiles - 2008-06-05

What's that theory that states that the more people who are around something, the less likely any of them will do anything to help? Also, I want to be the first to say, there's no way that driver didn't know he hit something. The driver might have gotten off easy since that guy was kinda walking out in the middle of the road and the car that hit him was behind this other car and blah blah but gunning it away at top speed totally doomed that guy.

Chet - 2008-06-05

Except, what the hell were those two cars doing crossing the double yellow line like that?

It looks like the one lady on the left does react, hysterical like... hands to face screaming, being useless.

Monchiles Monchiles - 2008-06-05

Follow the leader? Damn, you're right. They were totally screwed.

StanleyPain - 2008-06-05

My theory is that the two cars were racing/chasing....something of that nature. They seem very sure or their purpose; usually in hit and runs the person at least hits the breaks or reacts to the accident THEN leaves. These guys didn't even try to stop, they were headed for that turn together and didn't even flinch.

I think it is called Kitty Genovese syndrome, or just Genovese syndrome. I'm sure most people on PoE know about her murder, but if you don't, google it. Very fucking evil and sad.

As for this video, what the fuck? Assholes driving on the wrong side of the road to pass and obviously speeding. I hate that kind of selfish shit, even when it doesn't result in something this tragic. At least someone called 911, the cop got there really fast.

bias - 2008-06-05

these days they tend to call it the Bystander effect, or diffusion of responsibility. It bugged the shit out of me when i found out about it.

Dinky Patterson - 2008-06-06

I bet that car that the other two cars crossed the yellow lines to pass was driving slow for a few blocks because he was lost or looking for a particular address on that street, and the other two cars passed him out of frustration.

It's no excuse, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they'll say if they're caught.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-05

It's really time we dropped the big one, gentlemen. We may as well wipe it clean and start again.

kiint - 2008-06-05

and by "we" you mean...? those left in the bunker? JUST WHO I WANT TO START HUMANITY V.20

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-06

Good God, man. You're right.

There is to be no bunker. We'll just have to let nature take its course in creating it entirely from the beginning and among radioactive debris.

CuteLucca - 2008-06-05

A guy got hit by a car right in front of my workplace about a year ago. Within 10 seconds, there were a dozen people clustered around him, talking and keeping him conscious, redirecting traffic, taking down license plate numbers, and calling 911.

This, meanwhile, is disgusting.

Adham Nu'man - 2008-06-05

Niko Bellic.

chumbucket - 2008-06-06

oh my god...I really did try not to laugh at that comment but it just could not be helped

La Loco - 2009-01-28

I laughed at this comment, but what is funny is if this guy had been hit in ny there would have been six people helping him in a split second.

Udderdude - 2008-06-05

Welcome to Hartford .. we don't give a fuck.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-06-06

Seconded. Note to self: never have an injury there.

Stupid Lisa Garbage Face - 2008-06-05

what the fuck do you expect walking around in the middle of the road

he/she should have stopped though

Camonk - 2008-06-06

And did you see the way he was dressed? Dude was hella asking for it.

chumbucket - 2008-06-06

agreed, people who decide streets are ok to just stroll down need to see this...it's kind of why jaywalking laws exist people

kiint - 2008-06-06

you know its bad when they're knocked clean out of their shoes

Hooker - 2008-06-06

What would you guys hypothetically do in this situation?

I mean, I'd phone 911, then go see if the guy can talk (or at least I'd like to think that's what I'd do). But I'd be petrified of moving him in any way.

ChocFullOfFunk - 2008-06-06

I'd think this is, indeed, the recommended course of action. But at least you can go, you know, see if he's alive and whatever.

Ryo-Cokey - 2008-06-06

The police chief has retracted his earlier statement, apparently four people called 911 within a minute of the accident:

http://www.kvia.com/Global/story.asp?S=8438957&nav=AbC0

As for helping him, I imagine he was unconscious and had neck injuries. Meaning you couldn't move him, and you couldn't talk to him. You could go check his pulse, but that wouldn't accomplish anything.

"Ah, he's dead. Ok, call 911 back and tell them not to bother."

glendower - 2008-06-06

I'm from Connecticut and this video is just another example of the evil that is Hartford. Hartford is the state capital and yet shit like this happens every day. There's something in the air there. To me, the lack of response from bystanders and other drivers is more disturbing than the hit and run itself. The police chief stated that no one even called 911. The injured man was discovered by a cop responding to an unrelated call. This is probably the most depressing comment on humanity I've seen in a long time.

kennydra - 2008-07-07

What the hell kind of crap traffic camera is this? They should be able to see the faces of the drivers.

ENHANCE!

ROTATE 180 DEGREES!

ENHANCE!

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-07-07

People just look, stroll by, drive past, parallel park. Business as usual in Hartford. Don't worry, the street cleaners will pick that up eventually, just kick it to the curb or drive over it slowly, like a speedbump.

CHRIST CONNETICUT!

Jupiter - 2008-10-08

I feel like crying...

Five stars because of it.
