So they animated the character's faces as if they were puppets, even when they were cartoons! In THEORY that's a good idea, because you don't want to have the cartoon Kermit showing up the puppet... although, the puppets are way better looking in motion and have a wider range of expression than these guys, so they didn't do that good a job of it.
