where can you get some of this!?!?

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-08-24

Ice expands when it freezes, if it can't expand it won't freeze. When you hit the bottle the dent gives part of the ice a gap to expand in and it ripples down the bottle. I've only seen this done by simply removing the top.

Camonk - 2008-08-24

Yeah I've done this accidentally by puting bottles of water in the freezer. Tip it back to drink and it starts to freeze as soon as it hits the neck of the bottle.

Lauritz Melchior - 2008-08-24

Cool.

dancingshadow - 2008-08-24

Supercool !

fluffy - 2008-08-24

This is also fun to do with bottles of Coke, which is apparently how Icee was invented.

C. Eloi Marx - 2008-08-24

Needs an "Ice Nine" tag.

robotkarateman - 2008-08-24

5 stars for Satch.

Stog - 2008-08-24

I loves me some Ice Nine brand drinking water.

Meerkat - 2008-08-24

That is not ice, it's ear mites. They are hiding in the cap, held up by surface tension. When he hits the bottle he breaks the meniscus and they sink to the bottom.

BHWW - 2008-08-24

Supercooled water? More like super-"COOL" water, am I right?

Sigh.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-08-24

You know, we should be a proud people:

Not only are we masters of this planet, but ours has a shitload of two Hydrogen one Oxygen molecules floating about. H2O is some nutso shit; it is actually LESS DENSE in SOLID form than LIQUID!! How crazy is that?!

glasseye - 2008-08-24

Uh, liquids are almost always denser than solids. The molecules are packed tighter together...

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-08-24

Shit, wait, I thought most elements and molecules are denser in solid form than liquid, let alone gas.

:(

I am ignorant.

Chip - 2008-08-24

You are only ignorant in that you listen to glasseye.
What he's spewing is the Modest Mouse of science.

Knuckles - 2008-08-24

You were right. Solids are by far the least energetic of the four common phases. Less energy means less movement by individual molecules, and the "tighter packed" and more cohesive an object becomes. Liquids tend to be a little less dense, and gases even less so, then plasmas are the least dense.

Water is different for reasons I can't remember. Maybe its molecular geometry? I know its phase chart is basically backwards compared to most other compounds.

Syd Midnight - 2008-08-25

Treat yourself and read the first few chapters of Richard Feynman's "6 Easy Pieces". Water is a polar molecule, like a little Lego piece, and ice is a 6-sided crystal with a lot of empty space.

It's really obvious once you see a good drawing of how ice forms. Think of a snowflake.. they always have 6 sides and lots of empty space. That pattern goes all the way down to the molecular level.

j lzrd is right, water is a goddamned oddity, and it's possible that life cannot evolve without lots and lots of it.

almo - 2008-08-24

I've done this with assorted beverages a few times. It doesn't work for me every time, but it's quite satisfying when it does.

Squeamish - 2008-08-24

Science, you once again astound me. Keep it up.

DrVital - 2008-08-24

That's not ice, it's ICE-9

We are all doomed.

Syd Midnight - 2008-08-25

Kill it with fire.
