Question: not all cops are vicious scum, but it's a very enticing job if you're a limp-dicked bully who wants to victimize people and get away with it. Do you reckon there's any way to ameliorate this? Letting cops police themselves has clearly not been the answer. It seems to me the best way would be to make sure they never become cops in the first place, but I don't see how.

That Stanford prison experiment proves that an astonishing percentage of people will participate in atrocities. It's in our nature.

Hugo Gorilla - 2008-09-07

Here's a video showing him being arrested.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNc9ImWpNT0

It's hard to see what exactly happens. He's the one riding the bike and screams his name out while being put into a car. After that, the video is just a stand-off with the cops and chanting anti-war slogans.

Desidiosus - 2008-09-07

This sort of thing is nauseating. But then Republicans see this and automatically assume the kid must have been provoking the cops, and the media doesn't care.

heyitslozeau - 2008-09-07

see that's exactly it, it seems no matter how many abuses of power the cops have exposed, people can always fall back on "well they probably deserved it"

Binro the Heretic - 2008-09-07

The real problem is the attitude of the American public at large. Most of us have come to believe all protesters are annoying un-American whiny little shits and therefore deserve any abuse they receive at the hands of the authorities.

Bad cops aren't dumb. They won't mistreat someone if they know they're going to get in some kind of trouble for it. They used to stick with inner-city minorities and poor white trash because nobody cared what happened to them. Now, nobody cares what's going to happen to some college-age kid trying to voice opposition to the war in Iraq.

Meerkat - 2008-09-07

At least they didn't shoot him.

Yet.

Foolish Motorcycle Accident - 2008-09-07

Are we sure these allegations are true? Will somebody really start throwing up from not eating for 12 hours? I think we should reserve judgment until the facts are in.

That being said, this seems plausible.

takewithfood - 2008-09-07

I agree with you about the sentiment that protesters are un-American.. it really couldn't be more backwards. People will call the protesters hippy whiners and then turn right around and criticize China for behaviour they support in their own country. It makes no sense. The right to protest is of massive importance in any free country.

But no, we don't know if the allegations are true - at the moment they're just that: allegations. Sounds like there will be a lawsuit, and even the outcome of that lawsuit may not line up with what actually happened. I'm open to the idea that his story is true - I'm also open to the idea that it's partly or even wholly made up.

As for the not eating for 12 hours thing, I don't see why hunger would cause that. He's a skinny guy and he probably doesn't do well without food on a regular basis, but nausea just isn't a likely symptom. I'd say the greater risk is dehydration, given that he'd been biking around town all day, but even that won't cause nausea. I think it's much more likely that the nausea was related to a concussion.

takewithfood - 2008-09-07

Okay, so that was supposed to be two comments, not one. *cough*

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-09-07

We don't know how much they fed him when they did but from what I understand he threw up after having been beaten. When this happens your body craves nutrients more since you've lost them. The fact is he has witnesses for a lot of these abuses, so the rest of it fits into likelihood, especially since there is hospital documentation.

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-09-07

No rating but I go 12hr. without eating all the time. :(

Lindner - 2008-09-07

Uh huh.

GoneGirl - 2008-09-07

I have to admit that the urge to call this guy gay is hard to resist.

waxeater - 2008-09-07

As someone who eats every 2-3 hours 98% of the time, I think it's worth mentioning that I've had no problems going 12 hours without eating on a few occasions.

HankFinch - 2008-09-07

It is also worth mentioning that you do not represent all people.

I've known people who are under doctor's orders that were required sit and move as little as possible for 30 mins after meals because they burned calories too quickly.

but yes, I can easily go 12+ hrs without eating too

Guys please keep using the flash on on your camera. We want to make this look like a real press event.

baleen - 2008-09-07

It is a real press event, just not a real big one.

Whiny ass scruffy hippies, yeah they deserved it. God, listen to his voice.

baleen - 2008-09-07

har har.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-09-07

People who are better than you think this shouldn't happen to anyone.

RomancingTrain - 2008-09-07

bleep. . . bleep. . . bleep. . . bleep. . . bleep. . . bleep. . .

TheOtherCapnS - 2008-09-07

Yes, if Fox News is not there, or if anyone other than Fox News IS there, it is clearly not real news.

Cleaner82 - 2008-09-07

'Conservative' Stockholm-cases will keep latching onto the boys in blue, right up till the police state. Clearly it's up to the 'big government' 'tax and spend' liberals to give two shits about how the law is being enforced.

Ageusiatic - 2008-09-07

Why is it that every time Fred Phelps and his group protests, the cops seem to be fresh out of pepper spray, and forgot to charge their tasers?

Vicious - 2011-04-22

The Phelps clan knows EXACTLY how far they can go. I walked by one very small protest (on the way to a stand-up comedy show), and the Phelpses were police-taped into a little 10x10 square.
