I love this song.
I always thought it was a shame that it and the other song that was in the movie wasn't on any albums. (And yes, i know this one finaly showed up on Echoes - but i've yet to hear the other one anywhere else.)
Blah blah blah some old song bloo bloo we love Pink floyd cause our parents said they're important blorg blorg oh this song isn't on this LP yeah it is listen or put it on your MP3 so you can tell coffee house girls that you like important music arf arf
I never understood the subtext to this movie. Is it suggesting that Pink is just sad about his dad dying or that he had been lied to about HOW his dad died and when?
The important part of this song is more about how his fathers death was treated, specifically by the government. To the government his dad was just another number on a list, undeserving even of a signature on his death certificate. It sort of got to Oh god I'm writing a short essay on the symbolism in The Wall. Shoot me now
Also: This is probably one of my favorite Floyd songs.
No it's OK...it's not like this is Hannah Montana or something. I always appreciated the album and the movie for going beyond simple "rock" bullshit. But, yeah, I always assumed the hint was that there was some dark secret about his father. I got the part about the dehumanization of the dead, I just figured there was something else to it.
Yeah, this is pretty much the poetic highlight of an already poetic and beautiful movie. I think only the Nobody Home scene and Bring the Boys Back Home match this for spooky nostalgia.
