It's a weird problem with opponents to conservatism, that supposedly they're disgusted by sexism, but when a conservative woman opens her mouth they feel complete license to call them a slut or whore or unload their most twisted misogynistic thoughts about them; "Ann Coulter's vagina is full of rusty screws", etc. It was probably wise that a female VP was nominated, to encourage that sort of behavior and spite The Party that Dares to Hope.
