5 stars for Mojo Jojo mecha.

Also: Fap Fap Fap Fap Fap Fap

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-04

Having never seen the Powerpuff Girls Z cartoon, I'm amazed they kept all the classic badguys and badgirls.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-10-04

Only anime would think to take something that was meant as a parody of the medium and remake it into the very thing it was parodying.

Also, Buttercup is hot.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-04

It's a riddle within a secret wrapped in an enigma. Perhaps the parody is in fact parodying itself while it makes a parody of itself.

Also, Buttercup is hot.

Xenocide - 2008-10-05

The only way to parody a parody is to play the concept straight. It's like parody payback or something.

Therefore, Johnny Quest is a reverse-time parody of The Venture Brothers.

I love this video because it's fucking stuffed full of callbacks to the original show (most of which never made it into the anime, I'm sure.)

Whitewater5 - 2008-10-05

goddammit shut the fuck up you aspergers pedophile

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-05

Stay out of threads that don't invole you, in the future, thanks.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-06

Volve. @ Whitewater.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-10-06

My guess is that whitewater5 prefers Bubbles.

Keefu - 2008-10-08

I dunno, his aggressive indicates he'd be more of a Buttercup person. Jealously, perhaps.

GuyCorngood - 2008-10-04

An anime Him scares me.

B. Weed - 2008-10-04

We don't get a close look at HIM there. I wonder if he's actually disturbingly bishi?

Also, is that Puffy AmiYumi singing the theme song?

Meerkat - 2008-10-04

What the fuck language are you guys speaking?

Monchiles Monchiles - 2008-10-04

Weeabooneese.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-10-04

Him is brilliant, the voice actor does a dead perfect impression of the Blue Meanie. Where's the Mayor and his secretary?

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-04

Sarah Bellum?

ProfessorChaos - 2008-10-04

Is this show any good? I'm envisioning the original show's sense of humor, and if that's unchanged.... this may be worth watching.
Anyone here seen it?

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-10-04

It is nothing like the original show.

Nothing at all.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-04

Really? Did you watch that intro? Do you really have to ask?

5 stars for the fact it takes less than a second for it to start getting skeevy. And for the schadenfreude in that it'll probably last longer than the original.

DMKA - 2008-10-04

I watched the first episode when it first came out, because I was wondering the same thing. The answer is no.

To give you a rough idea of the horrible trainwreck it is:

- They are not sisters, or related in any way, they were no created by the professor, they were just normal middle school girls who got some power belt things as a result of one of his experiments.

- They're powers are not natural, but rather they transform into "Hyper Blossom", "Rolling Bubbles" and "Something-or-other Buttercup", like Sailor Moon transformations.

- The Professor has a son.

- Nearly all the enemies transform too, and are just normal people otherwise, with the exception of Mojo, who puts on some power suit. I never saw Him, Gang Green Gang, or Fuzzy Limpkins in the show so I don't know about them.

- There is no humor, as the show takes itself 100% seriously, even though it keeps some of the running gags from the original show, such as never being able to see Ms. Bellum's face. But it's not meant to be funny in this show.

I got all that from the first episode and had no desire to see anything further than that. And this intro, complete with megazord mechs and lazers shooting from Buttercup's armpits don't make me regret it.

DMKA - 2008-10-04

Oh, and in response to IrishWhiskey, it already ended. There were only 52 episodes.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-04

Bubbles still talks to squirrels.

garcet71283 - 2008-10-05

It lasted 52 episode.

Damn you Japan.

Xenocide - 2008-10-05

52 episodes is actually pretty good for a Japanese show. Even popular ones typically last half that long.

Also, my biggest disapointment with this show is that the Mayor is now a respected and wise authority figure, whose only failing seems to be that he's slightly forgetful.

Doctor Frederick Odd - 2008-10-04

This cartoon revels in being just as awful as you see in the intro. There may very well parodies within the show, but the show itself is not a padory.

Doctor Frederick Odd - 2008-10-04

Oops. That was meant as a reply to ProfessorChaos.

Hooper_X - 2008-10-04

...

of COURSE they all have giant robots to ride around in.

That being said, I'm tempted to 5 it just for Mojozinger Z.

Xenocide - 2008-10-04

The original PPG had a giant robot, too. In fact, this is basically the same one.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-10-04

...but in my dreams, whatever they be, I'll dream a little dream for thee...

Camonk - 2008-10-04

Five stars for making me want to outlaw every one of Japan's cultural products except for their insanely awesome game and physical challenge shows.

Yes that definitely, 100% includes their video games.

takewithfood - 2008-10-04

Hollywood: "I see your Powerpuff Girls Z, and I raise you Dragonball the movie."

Japan: "Touche."

dementomstie - 2008-10-15

I heard about this on NPR almost a year ago I think. Craig McCracken said that there were things that he had to change about Powerpuff Girls to make it... understandable? watchable? in Japan. One of those things was that he had to make The Professor not live with/watch over the girls because Japan sees it as weird to have a family that doesn't include a mother. There were other details like the giant robots, but the one that stuck in my head is that the "family dynamic" that was a central part of the show wasn't allowed because Professor Polyatom was a bachelor which I thought of as a weird detail to get hung up on. Especially for Japan.

Nikon - 2009-04-16

I don't believe he had to change anything to market PPG in Japan.
