Stupid hair, awful voice, but when he did that thing with his fingers at 0:30 I could see him being quite good as a distracted space boffin archetype. He's got a bit of Tom Baker about him, I think.

I am now older than the guy playing Dr. Who. I miss David Tennant already. Five stars for making me feel like 30 is around the corner.

I like his face. If he cuts his fucking hair he could make a go of it, but -2 stars for just making the Doctor younger again. Eccleston was the way to go IMO - hard and a little bit mean. They tried to make Tennant scary for like two episodes but dropped it like a hot kettle when his baby face made that ridiculous. In place of that they made him lonely and wistful, and I guess it seemed to work but now I'm afraid they're going to take it into pure vulnerability, like the weepy shit of the last season finale seemed to ominously forebode.
+1 star because I'll watch it anyway, dammit.

takewithfood - 2009-01-12 About making the Doctor younger again: Tennant seems to have drawn a powerful female fan base, and I imagine its hard for the producers to overlook that. I'm sure they want a repeat.
I was really hoping for Chiwetel Ejiofor.
|
Rovin - 2009-01-12 Steven Moffat didn't really make it any secret that he wanted an OLDER actor in the part again. Moffat says the guy blew them away in his tryout, though, so who knows.
|
allcaps - 2009-01-12 Female fan base, scoff scoff scoff. I'd let Eccleston's Doctor roger me right into next week. Tennant it'd be all like, "can we speed it up here?"

Helena Handbasket - 2009-01-12 Screw the female fan base. This guy looks like a fucking douche with a douche hair cut.
I liked Tennent and Eccelston a hell of a lot and I'm holding this guy to some high standards here. If he "blew them away" in rehearsals, then OK maybe he's impressive in-role and I'm just being spiteful because god damn that hair.. but we shall see.
Seriously though.. cut the hair, please cut the hair.

kingarthur - 2009-01-13 Seconding the Ejiofor statement.

Tennent's Doctor can be just as mean and tough as Eccleston's, he's just a bit more subtle about it, and only shows it when people really piss him off. He's more of a "beware the quiet ones" type. Except he's not really all that quiet, but you know what I mean.
I have serious doubts about this guy, but then I had serious doubts about Tennant, so we'll see.

I would have liked to see an older actor, but if it has to be someone for the kiddies, this guy seems OK I guess.

Should have been Johnson.

I am really glad that my low expectations at this point have since been greatly surpassed and now Smith is one of my favorite Doctors ever.
