This movie could not possibly be any better.

Sodomite - 2009-04-22

Mr. Polanski, you make good movies.

Godard's Drinking Problem - 2009-04-22

You know, you're right about all those assertions!

ProfessorChaos - 2009-04-22

I managed to spook the hell out of one of my high school English classes with my performance of this soliloquy. Easy audience, but still entertaining.

Paracelsus - 2009-04-22

This is brilliant, but you're wrong on all three counts.

Lurchi - 2009-04-22

well, what are yours?

pastorofmuppets - 2009-04-23

Branagh's Hamlet is fairly legit, other than that I got nothin'.

Paracelsus - 2009-04-23

To clarify: I don't think you will really find the same play represented in those three categories at the same time.

Soliloquy? Ok, I tend to be a big fan of the histories. The 'Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown' speech from Henry IV is great. If you like villains, there's a ton of stuff that comes out of the mouth of Richard III that blows me away, especially that first soliloquy. And Brutus in Julius Caesar, not to mention Marc Antony's big speech.

I hate to say it because it's said so often, but the best play has gotta be 'Hamlet'. Properly done, complete. Existentialism hundreds of years before Sartre starts thinking about it. The first modern character. Intricate psychological plotting. Elegant, Satanic revenge.

Film? For MacBeth I like 'Throne of Blood' quite a bit. Not to mention 'Scotland, PA'--tongue in cheek, but it gets the tone absolutely right.

Hey you're in luck -- Jon Finch plays Henry IV in the BBC productions.

The Olivier and the McKellen Richard III are both very good. So is the Olivier Hamlet (I'll grant you it's a pretty good play....) Throne of Blood and Ran are amazing movies, but they aren't in English, which leaves a little to be desired. I really like Othello by Orson Welles, and Chimes at Midnight (why is this not on dvd?)

Is Mackers really the best Shakespeare play? Methinks such lies and rhetoric a path that leadeth verily to blood.

Lurchi - 2009-04-22

"My name's Macbeth" at 7:35 is incredible.

Jon Finch went on to play Jerry Cornelius!

Dinkin Flicka - 2009-04-23

I believe the PC term these days is Faggots, or else you're a small minded bigot. Get with the FUCKing program.

StanleyPain - 2009-04-22

Wow, this is infinitely better than the Zefferelli version.

Keefu - 2009-04-22

Existentialism in the making!
