I think this movie looks awesome, i don't care what they call the main characters. i'm going to consider this to be "not a sherlock holmes movie" and enjoy it.

Camonk - 2009-05-21

Arthur Conan Doyle was a fatuous doof and a hack pulp writer. People who care if they make Sherlock Fucking Holmes less stupid should care about better things.

Cena_mark - 2009-05-21

He did fall for those hoaxed fairy pictures.

CornOnTheCabre - 2009-05-21

some people are just hideously abject to the idea of Hollywood making movies that anyone wants to see

Cena_mark - 2009-05-21

Some people don't realize that books and movies are different mediums requiring stories to be told differently.

sosage - 2009-05-21

I agree. I'm a big fan of the character, especially portrayed via the radio plays and by Basil Rathbone...but...the original stories were complete shitty throw away pulp bullshit. The character was often written out of impossible situations with cheap shitty elements the author tossed in last second that the reader would never fucking know about.

It is also a character that is very difficult to fuck up, especially for an actor like Rodney Downy Jr. My only raised eyebrow was over the action...Sherlock Holmes an action hero beating people up? Ok...whatever. Just play your God damned violin, do some cocaine and solve some fucking murders while being snarky.

sosage - 2009-05-21

Robert...Rodney?

mashedtater - 2009-05-21

"Just play your God damned violin, do some cocaine and solve some fucking murders while being snarky."

thats totally my new googletalk quote now.

Sign me up for the "looks pretty promising" camp.

ztc - 2009-05-21

Conan Doyle was sawing off legs, boxing sailors and harpooning whales before he'd even graduated med school. He built a medical practice from nothing and became a globally successful writer as a sideline, and some nugget on the internet is calling him a fatuous doof.

CAMONK HE COULD KILL YOU WITH HIS MOUSTACHE

freedoom - 2009-05-21

9 replies, a personal best for one of my comments.

Camonk - 2009-05-21

So could the Iron Sheik. Doesn't mean I give a crap about the integrity of any characters he's created.

FABIO - 2009-05-21

Sherlock Holmes doesn't beat people up.

He KICKS THEM THROUGH CONCRETE.

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-21

If this is rape then lock me up for rape.

No, actually I'd rather you didn't do that. But I still want to see this.

ProfessorChaos - 2009-05-21

5 stars for 1:42

Sudan no1 - 2009-05-21

don't worry, there will be many fanfics written to commemorate the rape.

garcet71283 - 2009-05-21

It's Robert Downy Jr.
Everytime a movie looks like it is going to suck and he is in it, it turns out great or at least very entertaining simply because of Robert Downy Jr.

Also, Holmes had a coke habit...so this is kinda in character.

mashedtater - 2009-05-21

agreed.

Scattersane - 2009-05-21

Sherlock Holmes was a drug addict, an accomplished boxer, refused to remember that the earth revolved around the sun because he considered it irrelevant to his field of study, and once straightened out a bent iron poker.

None of this is really out of character. In fact, it strikes me as truer than most adaptations.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-21

Robert Downy Jr. as Data.

Sean Robinson - 2009-05-21

Caminante, you just made me laugh for the first time in over 3rty-six years.

I know it is important that you are informed of this.

"Burlesque is a genre of entertainment also known as Travesty. Prior to Burlesque becoming associated with striptease, it was a form of musical and theatrical parody in which an opera or piece of classical theatre is adapted in a broad, often risqué style very different from that for which it was originally known."

Perfectly legitimate concept and a very old, respected form of satire. Don't piss your pants over it.

bac - 2009-05-23

Travesty:

1.a literary or artistic burlesque of a serious work or subject, characterized by grotesque or ludicrous incongruity of style, treatment, or subject matter.

2.a literary or artistic composition so inferior in quality as to be merely a grotesque imitation of its model.

3.any grotesque or debased likeness or imitation: a travesty of justice.

I was thinking mostly of 2. Although yours is interesting.

Merzbau - 2009-05-21

Absolutely everything about this except for the name "Guy Ritchie" looks awesome, I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

FABIO - 2009-05-21

"Jude Law"

dueserpenti - 2009-05-21

I will watch this terrible movie and enjoy it very much.

StanleyPain - 2009-05-21

This doesn't look very good just from a movie standpoint (and I think Guy Ritchie is a terrible director), but in terms of raping Sherlock Holmes, it really isn't. The films and television series of Holmes over the last few decades are what has advanced the notion that the books were these super serious, stuffy, logical, plodding catalogs of evidence and Holmes gathering people in locations to declare the perpetrator of the crime and all that stuff which is typically associated with detective fiction. In reality, most of Doyle's work was very much in the pulp-fiction vein with lots of lurid and adventurous elements with Holmes using doing battle with the forces of evil in some crazy manly man sort of way. The "Sexiness" of this movie might not be in character with the books, but it's not as radical a step out of character as a lot of people might think.

bac - 2009-05-23

Explosions.

jerrysp702 - 2009-08-12

Everything about Sherlock Holmes was a ripoff of Edgar Allen Poe's Dupin.

Doesn't tell you whether the movie's good or not, I'm just saying is all.

bac - 2009-10-04

Heavily influenced but not a rip-off.
