Poor guy.

Blaise - 2009-05-25

Maybe the key to success is unluckiness. Take for example what he has to do to pimp his book.

Sorry, I somehow managed not to notice the "embed link" button on the video when I submitted this.

"I have taken risks"

Luck: Superstition? Or Fortuitous Circumstance?

Hey! a penny!

HarrietTubmanPI - 2009-05-26

It's like the epitome of NewsCorp versus Intellectualism.

You have done university level research and teach at Cornell - a position that requires much harder work and higher brain function than which is required of my job, but you are no match for my British Accent!

British accent!!!

They key to success is making a book that tells other people how to be successful. They eat that shit up.

Dan Druff - 2009-05-26

That's thinking small.

The key to success is writing books that tell people who are already successful that they are special and wonderful individuals who are different than the "herd" of undifferentiated "failures" out there.

Not only will the rich buy it, but the poor will too and they'll never blame anyone but themselves for not being successful.

Well, I think he severely underplays the important role that social networks play in success - i.e., your level of Knowing A Guy That Knows A Guy; but I wouldn't completely disagree with that statement.

On the other hand, attempting to define as nebulous a concept as "success" in such a way that it can be mathematically calculated with some sort of "risk + effort + motivation / (strength of weak ties) ^luck" formula is goddamned ludicrous in the first place.

Then again, this is Fox, so I'm sure they aren't above resorting to pseudoscientific hokum to get their point across (i.e. HURRAH FOR LAISSEZ-FAIRE!).

"I left my country and came to America because I believe LUCK DOESN'T EXIST HERE. If you believe in LUCK, why don't you just leave and GO TO MY COUNTRY?"

Brain hurts.

Goofy Gorilla - 2009-05-26

This is why we don't like arguing with the laymen.

Are you saying that Hard Work = Success is not a theorem of advanced economics?

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-05-26

Depends what you call both success and hard work! Miners work pretty hard, pop stars are pretty successful...

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-05-26

Look at it this way, studio interviewer guy: how do you explain that gaudy set and your inane delivery if their entire existence isn't simply down to "right place, right time."
