I think that Joequin Phoenix is obviously trying to emulate a gay black man. Thus, I stand by my original description.

What I have a problem with is this notion of a "full-fledged adult." What the hipster concept (that is, today's incredibly broad definition) relies upon is "hipness" (of course not explicitly because this is apart from "hip") - this hipness being the foundation of some cultural niche marked by some level of apartness from "mainstream" popular culture. So this would include Gen-Xers perpetuating the modes of cultural exchange from their 20s into middle age (who, from someone's personal perspective could "not have grown up," which I would guess implies losing oneself completely in the values of normal America - but this isn't always the case and I would argue that many older hipsters are just straight-laced Americans with a different mask), and this isn't necessarily negative. I think for many within these "hip" communities, "hipster" becomes a pejorative term for the dandies. But I think there are so many more subtleties beyond this that the term has taken on due to its different uses by different groups of people.

fractured, while topically right, your position fails to integrate the influences of "common sense," as Gromsci meant it, to properly account for, that is "transcend," the perpetuated mechanistic thinking inherent in American culture, meaning ACADEMIC DISCOURSE MASTURBATION IS RUINED ON THIS TOPIC.

I really only wanted to put out a well-formed position. I sort of used to like poetv because it seemed like a pretty cool forum for discussion but I guess it's basically youtube now.

I was no doubt acting within the structure of the culture and (not attempting to transcend anything) work within the confines to "explore ideas."

Hey, I for one was enjoying this thought provoking discussion on the origins and implications of the hipster movement! Just a couple of things:

1. 20-somethings are mostly part of the Millennials and not Gen-X'ers. And frankly, I ironically place the blame for the rise of the hipster persona squarely on their shoulders (for I am a Millennial myself).

2. Walls-of-Text on poeTV will always get called-out (and rightly so). The nature of poeTV's commenting section guarantees that no discussion can last longer than a day or two, thus insuring a very low incidence of Godwin's Law and other trolling phenomenon. In addition, it hinders in-depth discussions about the videos, and any attempt to start one will be dismissed with a snarky comment. Don't worry though, past transgressions will be forgiven by the time you comment on the next video (with the possible exception here and there. See: "poorwill v. THE SUGAH RAIN" for more information on this topic).

3. Don't worry, fractured, we'll forgive you for SORT of used to like poetv because it SEEMED LIKED a pretty cool forum. But keep in mind that poeTV is neither "pretty cool" or "likable".

TL;DR: The comments in this thread actually make the video better than it really is: 3 stars.

fracture, are you denying that critically dissecting 'hipsterism' in a meaningful way is not akin to using words pomp language to discussing janitorial duties? Janitor describing his job: "First I utilize the mop and the cleaning solution as a means to extricate the dirt particles from the floor, before mitigating H2O overexposure with the shop vac."

Yes one can speak this way, be accurate, and explore ideas, and also be quite silly for doing so on this particular topic in this particular forum. Why not explore such ideas, say, in an academic journal, web site, forum, blog, or sociology course?
